Dr. Barry A Turner, DDS

Dr. Barry A. Turner is a native Californian.  Graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (thus the "Ivy League" DMD degree) and completing his General Practice Residency with the Veterans Administration, he moved to Grass Valley in 1974 with his wife Sharyn.  Their son Brady (35) and daughter Meghan (31) are both married and are successfully on their own.  Sharyn (RN, PHN, MA) is a registered nurse and works at the County Superintendent of Schools office developing health curriculum and coordinating the services of school nurses for Nevada County Schools.
Dr. Turner's commitment to dentistry:  "Up until thirteen years ago I did the same as most dentists in completing the courses required for bi-annual license renewal.  Thirteen years ago, my staff and I embarked on an academic track that departed from the usual, completing almost every 'hands-on' clinical course in cosmetic dentistry, neuromuscular dentistry (TMJ/bite problems), and sleep medicine …courses offered at the highly acclaimed Las Vegas Institute (LVI).  Now, routinely, we complete three to four times the required education credits and are at the 'leading edge', having only the best and latest equipment and training to provide the best that dentistry has to offer." 
Dr. Turner's brief history as a high achiever:  His leadership background includes being high school student body president, an Eagle Scout, a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel (10 years as a navigator, 14 as a dentist, 5 active, 19 reserves),  his five-county Butte-Sierra Dental Society president, a California Dental Association delegate (6 years) and trustee (6 years), a leader of multiple third-world humanitarian projects (Mexico (X18), Nepal (X4), Uganda (X2), and Papua New Guinea (X1), and the 2007-2008 Nevada City 49er Rotary Club president. He was featured in Doctor of Dentistry magazine (cover on left) and has his own chapter about his successful practice in the just-released book "Playing Your 'A' Game" by dental consultant Dr. Bill Blatchford.
Commitment to health:  "I try to 'walk (run, ride, climb) my talk' with my own dental health and overall health.  I have had all of my own dentistry replaced twice: once to convert all of my old Air Force silver/mercury fillings to gold and then gold replaced with high tech tooth-colored porcelains.  I travel to Seattle to see my own personal dentist.  I have not missed a hygienist appointment in the last six years.  I can count on one hand the number of times I missed flossing in the last year.  As far as my overall health, I have a complete physical exam every other year.  I either run, bike, or lift weights one to two hours, six days per week.  I have run 65 marathons and completed my first mountain climb over 20,000 feet in Nepal in October of 2008" (Mt. Lobuche at 20,070 feet).  He and his son Brady are currently 1/3 of the distance across the USA, bicycling sections one-week at a time.
