Dr. Benton H H Chun, MD

I first met Dr. Chun back in the mid 1980s when I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst. He was very gentle and understanding in explaining things to me. Fast forward about 20 years - I had switched insurances a couple times due to jobs and ended up with different doctors, but when I was able to go back to HMSA found him again and returned to his care. He didn't miss a beat. Always concerned for my weight, knowing what the results could be, he always encouraged me to lose weight. I've had to have 2 procedures through him and each time he was very gentle and always warned me before each step as to what to expect. I'm very thankful he's still around and will be sad when he has to retire. His staff is also very warm and welcoming. Great service overall. The only ding would be the phone schedule. Trying to remember which times to call is a little confusing and there's no way to leave a message. However, when you do reach someone, they're always very gracious and pleasant.

Been a patient for 20+ years. Dr. Chun runs a very busy office. Yet I have found him always to take the time, IF your questions are sincere, and you are willing to listen too. He has little time for nonsense. He is very thorough and his knowledge is vast. Very compassionate doctor.

After a negative mammogram, I saw Dr. Chun for an annual physical when he found a lump in my left breast. He sent me back to kapiolani for an ultra sound. The ultra sound came back negative as well. When I went back to see Dr. Chun, he was adamant that he felt a suspicious lump and referred me to a surgeon. The surgeon said she thought I had lumpy breasts and couldn't tell which lump Dr. Chun was concerned about. Since I had precancerous cell in my left breast 7 years prior the surgeon decided to do an MRI. The MRI detected something suspicious. So a biopsy was conducted. The biopsy showed that I did have breast cancer. As a result, I had to see several different doctors (medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, general surgeon , plastic surgeon, and internal medicine doctor). All doctors were amazed that Dr. Chun could detect a cancerous lump just through a routine breast exam and was insistent even when faced with negative mammograms and ultrasounds. Each doctor asked to… feel my left breast to see if they could detect anything suspicious, but they couldn't. Although the past 10 months have been rough since I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, I will always be grateful to Dr. Chun for insisting that more testing needed to be done. If he hadn't been my doctor, the cancer would have progressed without me knowing. I am happy to be going to my annual physical soon. I'm alive and cancer free because of Dr. Chun.

Attempted to get help for a friend. Contacted his office for information. The nurse is the rudest person I have ever encountered on the phone. Her name starts with an "L". A very insensitive nurse. She is very short with you, doesn't let you talk and not helpful at all. Terrible, terrible, terrible! How can someone so rude work at an office that is supposed to help women at possibly a very vunerable moment in their lives (infertility)? I read online that his office staff was rude and I was able to confirm it.

Dr Chun failed to test me for a sperm analysis after my wife visited for 3 months. I thought a sperm test was a reasonable request since last i checked it takes two to make a baby. Turns out my sperm isn't so healthy. Dr Chun went defensive when i asked simple questions. (My friend had impaired sperm{had brain surgery} due to a pituitary tumor and i wanted to know if he thought i was in the same catergory). He never allowed me to ask as he thought i was questioning his knowledge. Then he got really snippy and started to make snide remarks to me. I've never had a Dr treat me like that and that was the only time i met him. My wife and I very upset about his behavior.

next time I will bring some candy to see this Dr chen so we can have a nice talk so does his nurse lady.

Although Dr. Chun's office is very busy, he always takes time to talk to me about any issues.

I'm very disappointed w/ Dr. Chun. I was diagnosed w/ PCOS back in 2005 & I tried taking 5 cycles of Clomid w/ no success. Every cycle would run me approx $300, and I always felt rushed @ every visit. I decided to go to another fertility specialist who actually ran tests on me & never rushed me. Long story short, come to find out I don't have PCOS, both my fallopian tubes were blocked. Now I am finally pregnant, thanks to my new fertility doctor.
