Summary
Betelihem Checol, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC - I didn’t set out to become a psychiatric provider. I set out to save lives — and for over 15 years, that’s exactly what I did, first as a critical care nurse caring for some of the sickest patients in the hospital.
But somewhere along the way, I noticed something the machines couldn’t measure. I’d watch a patient’s body stabilize while their mind quietly fell apart — the fear, the grief, the exhaustion nobody had time to treat. And I watched the same thing happen to the nurses and doctors around me. We were trained to take care of everyone but ourselves.
That’s what led me to psychiatry. Not a change in direction, but a continuation of the same calling — to care for the whole person, not just the parts that show up on a chart.
Today, at Abroi Psychiatry, I work with people who are used to holding everything together: healthcare workers, caregivers, first responders, working parents, and anyone quietly carrying more than they let on. Many …of my patients tell me the same thing after their first visit — “I wish I hadn’t waited this long.”
The name Abroi comes from El-Roi, a Hebrew name meaning “The God Who Sees Me.” It’s the name a woman named Hagar gave to God after she felt completely alone in the wilderness and realized she’d been seen all along. That’s the spirit behind this practice. Whatever you’re carrying — anxiety, burnout, trauma, depression, the quiet weight of caring for everyone else — you don’t have to carry it unseen anymore.
My approach blends evidence-based psychiatric treatment — medication management and psychotherapy — with genuine warmth and cultural sensitivity. No judgment. No jargon. Just care that treats you as a whole person, not a diagnosis.
Abroi Psychiatry offers integrative, evidence-based mental health treatment for adults suffering from burnout, chronic stress, anxiety, trauma, overwhelm, and emotional fatigue. We specialize in working with healthcare workers, first responders, caregivers, and other high-performing individuals who spend their lives giving to others at the expense of taking care of themselves. Here, we believe that everyone deserves a safe space to restore, heal, and regain balance. We want to help you reconnect with yourself and shift from surviving to thriving
