Dr. Flaherty grew up in Asheville, graduated from Asheville High School, and attended the University of North Carolina where he received bachelor degrees in both chemistry and literature. Upon graduating from the UNC dental school in 1979, he joined Dr. Robert H. Owen in dental practice. Dr. Flaherty has served as president of the Buncombe County Dental Society, as president of the First District of the North Carolina Dental Society, as well as other professional, church, and civic committees and boards. Dr. Flaherty and his wife, Darlene, have two children: Brooke, a graduate of UNC with a degree in public relations, and Trey, who is currently a UNC student.
