Dr. Bintou Mary Gassama, MD

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS WOMAN. This women must have slept through schooling because she is only opinion, 0 actual knowledge even for the most minimal depression. I’ve been in treatment for almost 20 years and she’s the worst psych I’ve ever had the misfortune to speak to.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Dismissed my concerns that I am Autistic on my first visit and suggested I had a personality disorder instead within 5 minutes. She said “Autistic people don’t know they’re Autistic”, as if Autistic people are too unintelligent for self awareness. Unbelievable. 4 years later a competent doctor diagnosed me with Autism. I left my appointment with dr. Gassama with SI.

Does not care about patient. She asks questions but does not listen to your answers. Often feels like she’s distracted when you’re speaking to her. Find another doctor that cares and talks to you with care.

I was seeing her for medication management for my depression. After a decade of depression, I was experiencing new sleep and energy problems that concerned me. She brushed off my concerns and then accused me of hiding something from her. I was not hiding anything and was looking for help. The session was so awful that I discontinued care with her.

I went to this woman to restart a medication regime for bipolar disorder. Was given Lexapro, and told to switch providers when I asked for a mood stabilizer. Pushed talk therapy when I've been in talk therapy off and on for 15 years. I have never been spoken to so rudely or had a psychiatrist with such a misunderstanding of bipolar disorder. Keep your opinions out of your practice, and stick to what is known.

Find someone else if mental health is a problem. She is not it, no compassion for patients, harms more than helps!

I'm pretty upset that my new insurance doesn't have her in my network. I'm having to find a new psychiatrist and it's very distressing. She's been managing my meds, very effectively, for the past year and has been really kind, patient, and good at listening. I'll miss you, Dr Gassama.

I am not the kind of person to leave reviews, especially negative. I struggled with wether to write this or not, but I honestly believe it could save somebody’s life. Dr. Bintou Gassama was a horrible experience for me. I was prescribed Lexapro, which made a lot of sense considering our intake appointment and my symptoms at the time. Then, almost immediately, I began to experience what I now know is mania. I began driving erratically, nearly causing several car accidents (I normally drive like an old lady to church). I wanted to punch everyone. I began screaming at people. Extreme agitation and nonstop energy like I’ve never felt before. I met with Dr. Gassama to discuss and she told me these symptoms were not related to the antidepressant, Lexapro is well tolerated by the elderly, and if I can’t handle this med then there would be no other options for medications and I would be limited to talk therapy. Ok…this experience literally almost killed me (or someone else). Met with another… doctor, received the extremely obvious diagnosis of bipolar, and have been on a mood stabilizer for a year. Yes, I’ve had to tweak the medication to find the right dose. Yes, bipolar can be hard to diagnose and the Lexapro made sense initially with the information we had. But gaslighting a patient when they enter a mixed manic state? It’s your fault, no other medication options, and these extreme side effects that are nearly polar opposite of your personality that began a week after your first dose are unrelated to the new medication? Please avoid this Doctor. Best case, she is lazy and at worst, dangerously incompetent. I hate writing negative reviews but it is SCARY how this person would have let me believe my violent outburst and dangerous driving was completely unrelated to the mixed manic state I had just entered by starting an antidepressant (which is the gold standard for diagnosing bipolar, by the way). There are many options (I know now) for medications, as well as providers for treatment. Please do not trust this person with your mental health unless you have a very mild, easily diagnosed and treated condition. Even then I would look elsewhere if possible.

I went to an appointment with a client today in Duluth, MN and was completely impressed by how thorogh and caring she is. She carefully studied the vast array of meds, asked many questions and found a better alternative for my client's particular needs. She even went over the allotted time to get all the info and history needed. I have encountered many psychiatrists in my work, and Dr. Bintou Gassama is the very best!!
