Dr. Brian T Bast, MD

Long horrific experience with Dr.Brian Bast at UCSF. My horror story began in 2004, when UCSF affiliated Oral Surgeon Dr.Scott Podlesh placed a dental implant (to replace tooth #30). Due to excrutiating pain, Dr.Scott Podlesh referred me back to UCSF, where my dental implant was evaluated by Dr.Brian Bast and his team. Dr.Bast documented he saw nothing wrong with the dental implant. My pain kept kept getting progressively worse over the year. I went to other OS's but they referred me back to UCSF. In 2011, I was referred to UCSF's Mount Zion pain clinic. I was prescribed narcotic painkillers like Tramadol. While Dr.Bast maintained he saw "no reason for my pain." Eventually, I lost my career and ended up on state disability. My pain kept getting worse, and the Tramadol started giving my gastrointestinal problems. In 2017, I was referred to Stanford. The Oral Surgeon at Stanford referred me to Stanford's Neurosurgeon. I was send for a MRI at Stanford, The MRI showed the dental implant… had caused a compression against my Trigeminal never, damage to a vein and arteries. Stanford's Neurosurgeon had to do a cranial surgery called Microvascular Decompression. After that, Stanford's Oral Surgey removed my dental implant at Stanford hospital, with a team of experts. Since UCSF's Mount Zion clinic prescribed Tramadol and other medications from 2011-1017, an Endscopy revealed gastrointestinal problems. I am still on state disability, on food stamps, and was approved for section 8 housing. With 2 University degres, I lost my career. I am currently a member of several Trigeminal Neuralgia gorups. And have come across other former patients of UCSF who had had the same experience with OS's at UCSF.

Over a decade ago. UCSF affiliated OS Scott Podlesh placed a dental implant to replace a molar tooth he said was bad and needed to be extracted (right jaw tooth #30). I started having excruciating pain after placement of the dental implant. Dr.Podlesh referred me to UCSF. At UCSF, Dr.Brian Bast documented he saw no dental, medical, or neurological reason for my pain. I begged him to remove my dental implant, but he adamantly refused. My pain kept getting progressively worse over the yrs. Every time I visited an Oral Surgeon outside of UCSF, they referred me back to UCSF stating they were not the ones who placed my implant. In 2011, I was referred to UCSF's Mount Zion clinic, whose doctors maintained they saw no reason for my pain, but also send me for a brain scan. They then prescribed narcotic painkillers such as Tramadol with no diagnosis. Tramadol taken over a span of several yrs started giving me heartburn and gastrointestinal problems. And I ended up needing an Endoscopy at a… hospital in Fremont as UCSF refused to do it. I ended up losing my career and on SSDI. I was also seen at UCSF by UCSF Neurosurgeon Dr.Edward Chang who also claimed my pain is a "rare psychological case." Last yr, I was finally referred to another medical institution in Palo Alto. The Oral Surgeon in Palo Alto diagnosed me with Trigeminal Neuralgia (a disorder of the 5th cranial nerve a result of the dental implant placement surgery). The Neurosurgeon at the other medical institution in Palo Alto send me for a MRI. My MRI showed a compression against my Trigeminal nerve. The Neurosurgeon at the medical intuition did my cranial surgery (Microvascular Decompression MVD) to correct the compression. He hospitalized me for abt 2 weeks (for observation) because I was very weak physically and in really bad shape. My Trigeminal Neuralgia symptoms started to improve shortly thereafter. But I still had localized Atypical TN at the dental implant side. I again send emails to UCSF OS's asking them to remove my dental implant. The manager at UCSF OS department send me emails to contact UCSF's Risk Management Department. I thereafter received threatening letters from UCSF's Risk Management Department. I informed my Neurosurgeon in Palo Alto that UCSF was still not willing to remove my dental implant. So my Neurosurgeon and OS at the institution in Pall Alto consulted and determined it would be best if their Oral Surgeon removed my dental implant at their hospital under anesthesia. My ATN symptoms are starting to reduce as time goes by. Dr.Brian Bast is a cheat, liar, and fraud.

Dr.Scott Podlesh referred me to UCSF due to excruciating pain from a dental implant Dr.Podlesh placed. Oral Surgeon Dr.Brian Bast examined me at UCSF and claimed there was nothing wrong with the dental implant. UCSF is "world renowned" so I believed him and the other UCSF OS's and dentists. My pain got progressively worse over the years. I recently went to another medical/dental clinic for a 2nd opinion. There are arteries, blood vessels, and most important nerves that connect from the jaw to the brain. The dental implant had caused so much damage I ended up needing brain surgery. Currently in recovery.

Seems to know his business, but UCSF in general is very disorganized and their scheduling system was a huge fail. He was suppose to get back to me after MRI, but they lost the first set, and then i never heard back from him. He never returned emails. The resident at the time called me and emailed me several times urging me to keep trying. Unfortunately, he rotated out of the Maxiliofacial dept. So, I finally called and made a f/u appt. Hopefully I will get more and better information this time.

I found Dr. Bast after I had been to another surgeon who I was very uncomfortable with to do an implant on an infected tooth that had had a failed root canal. The other doctor made me very uncomfortable by suggesting he used animal bone in part of the implant procedure. Dr. Bast has great bedside manner, he used an approach that did not involve any animal bone. he is just really really smart and really good (look at where the guy went to school and has practiced). he explained everything at each stage carefully, and I just felt I was in excellent hands the entire time.

I came to see Dr Bast for removing my Glandular Odontogenic Cyst. He is very good diagnostic doctor/surgery. He can avoid my nerf during the surgery then I did not get the numb on my lip. Thank you so much Dr.
