Brian Bethea, MD is the Vice Chief of Cardiac Surgery with the MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and the regional chief of outreach for the Baltimore region. Dr. Bethea's clinical and research interests involve minimally invasive approaches to valvular and structural heart disease. This includes procedures such as TAVR, transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement, transcatheter tricuspid valve repair and replacement. He has participated in all major US clinical trials for TAVR and has been involved in three transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement trials. He has also been a proctor for all of the valves and the only US proctor for the Tendyne transcatheter mitral valve replacement platform.

I already had 1 open heart surgery from another doctor. This surgery failed and 1 of the 2 valves wold have to be re-replaced. I tried to get another surgeon to replace the valve, but they wouldn't touch me. I heard words like "your heart is so damaged I will look at you in 4 to 6 months and make an evaluation" I also got comments like "You cannot wait 4 to 6 months the way you heart is leaking, you won't make it." I was out of options when I happened to find Dr. Bethea. He immediately said that he could repair the valve, and he won't have to open my chest again. He said he can go into my side. Long story short, he did. He replaced the valve that was not put in correctly, and repaired a third valve that he saw was leaking. He also made some cuts that eliminated heart flutter that I had. From comments that cardiologists had after the operation, I would classify the Dr. as having a genius technique.
