Dr. Brian Todd Helfand, MD

I will NEVER use Dr Helfand or NorthShore HealthSystem again. I was discharged from the hospital after Dr Helfand performed prostate surgery in Sept 2021. My hospital Discharge Instructions said to call his office if I had bad bleeding or blood clot problems. I had both of these so I called his office 3 times and even though 3 URGENT messages were sent to his office NO ONE EVER called back. My hospital Discharge Instructions said to go to the Emergency Room if I could not reach Dr Helfand or his office so I had to go to the ER. I filed a complaint with NorthShore HealthSystem about Dr Helfand’s office refusing to return my 3 phone calls and that I have to pay for going to their ER because Dr Helfand’s office REFUSED to call me back. They replied but REFUSED to acknowledge what happened to me so now I have to pay for going to their ER. SUMMARY: Dr Helfand or his office would NOT help me during this part of my recovery and abandoned me when I had medical problems after my surgery.

He is like doctors are supposed to be— spends time, thoughtful and has a human soul

Saw many urologists for my prostate cancer. Dr. Brian was the only one who seemed to have everything-- excellent grasp of the concepts behind my cancer, excellent bed side manner and excellent team. He is humble and a "real" person. Can't say enough.

Who would ever think that a urologist could change your life? Truly best medical experience that I have had—- took a scary situation and made comfortable! Can’t say enough!

Was very scared when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Dr. Helfand made me feel at ease. I underwent robotic surgery and recovered very quickly. He continues to provide the same reassurance. He has an excellent bedside manner.

Saw many urologists throughout Chicagoland and actually traveled to other major cancer centers including Memorial Sloan Kettering, but found best and most comprehensive care with Dr. Helfand! Should be standard for care in urology and medicine.

Best in Chicago!!! Shopped around and by far best experience. Can not compare Dr. Brian’s compassion and skill. Had immediate return of ALL of my functions after my robotic surgery. Was a breeze and thank Brian and his staff!

Dr. Helfand was the surgeon for my prostatectomy a month and a half ago. I can't say enough about him as an accomplished surgeon in his field, but also his amazing people skills. He is very passionate about prostate surgery. He's been doing prostatectomy for decades, and started with robotic assist surgery when it first came available about 15 years ago. So, I couldn't find anyone with more experience--I looked. Besides this technical skill and knowledge, his bedside manner is quite amazing. Every time I'm in appointment with him, and on surgery day, I seemed to be his only concern. He communicated everything I needed to know, and patiently answered all my extra questions. These qualities get five stars deservedly. Unfortunately, I've run out of stars, and can't give another for his super friendly demeanor on top of these technical abilities. He is always smiling and feels like an actual friend.

He fought my cancer and he won! Best surgeon in the state of IL! Great team and a fantastic overall experience!
