Dr. Brian Patrick Lahey, MD

First, I just read that his license was suspended in Kansas for sexual relationships with his patients and smoking pot while on the job, but he still has a license in Missouri, so beware. My son calls him "the quack". He was my son's psychiatrist for a while out of necessity. I never liked him but being in the middle of a custody battle where my son's dad disagreed with his treatment meant that no doctors wanted to take him on as a patient. Dr. Lahey was awful. The only thing positive was that he kept giving my son his meds. But, he seemed to want to rewrite the entire DSM-V because he disagreed with everything I had ever been told and everything I have ever read. He seemed to like the sound of his own voice and talked on and on and none of us had a clue what he was talking about. He created new "issues" he believed my son had, like "alpha male" syndrome. My son is autistic and bipolar. He literally told my son in front of me that he didn't have to be afraid of strangers… because no one was going to just snatch him ("people don't do that") even though I told him we had a child sex predator a block away from us. Never mind that we spend half our kids' lives teaching them "stranger danger" and that autistic kids are more susceptible to strangers! He treated me like I was stupid and he was the pompous expert with the degree on his wall. He would not listen to me at all. I finally had enough and yelled at him and walked out of his office and found a new doctor who has been wonderful!

He is arrogant, rude, condescending, makes it clear he thinks he is the smartest one in the room. He made my child and I who were both patient cry and afraid to seek psychiatric care.

Possible drug issue, improper sexual relationship with patients, prescribing addictive drugs improperly.

He is a great physician. I have never had any problem understanding him.

i have visited doctor lahey about three times. I hate him and I always have. The only thing that made my visit pleasurable in any way was his dog. My dad made me go because i was extremely stressed and struggling with anxiety. After an hour of pretending the things Brian Lahey was saying were making any sense at all, I guess he came to the conclusion that i needed adderal. He wrote me a prescription and i have been taking it for about three weeks. I refuse to take it daily because adderal is known to induce anxiety. I also recently found out that he works with patients who struggle with pill addiction. Adderal is also highly addictive and I have family history of addiction. I just find it rather odd that I went for help with anxiety and was given adderal.

I thought he was great. My son really was able to connect with him and that is important. He took his time and listened. I'm relieved to have finally found my son a Doctor he is comfortable with and Mom as well .

Dr Lahey is treating my son for ADHD, depression and anxiety. We have been trying to contact him for a week with no response. My son's meds will run out in 2days and we are needing an appointment and prescriptions. The receptionist is helping us contact him but she isn't having any luck either. I don't understand why he isn't responding and feel he is being negligent to this patient. He only communicates through text messaging. We will be looking for a new doctor.

I worked with Dr. Lahey in a school based setting 5 years ago and I highly recommend him. He is brilliant with medication and tries to put children on the lowest therapeutic amount. It may take a couple months to get the amount right. While some above have experienced him as rude, it is not really who he is. He is passionate about helping but nay not always come across like a therapist. He would ask me to occasionally attend a session if I was seeing the family for therapy. He really wants what is best for his patients. I have known him to go the extra mile with patients. He may not be the right fit for everyone, but has so much to offer.

My son suffered a traumatic brain injury and stroke. When we went to Dr. Lahey he was on 5 different medications and was having multiple side effects from each of them. Dr. Lahey worked with us to get him off of all of them and took the time to find out what he really needed. My son is 6 months into recovery from his injury and is doing so much better. I believe a large part of that is because of Dr. Lahey's dedication to help him get on the correct med. Previous doctors treated the symptoms by throwing meds at us, but Dr. Lahey looked at the big picture treated him with one medication. He really talked to me and my son and listened to what we had to say. Dr. Lahey explained things to me and answered my questions. I would recommend him to anyone who was looking for a child psychiatrist who is invested in their patients.

Dr. Lahey is an outstanding listener and does not have the same game plan for his patients. I found him to be very understanding and extremely helpful, he is a class act.
