Blue Cross covers and annual mammogram at no cost to the patient. My experience was that I was told that the radiologist needed additional views, and that changed the mammogram from standard to diagnostic. They tell you this while you're still undressed and waiting for your results. The implication of needing more views is that there's an issue. You have no way of knowing if the images just were not good. So what are you going to do? Leave? I obviously received a bill for my "free" mammogram. I attempted to find out the reason for the additional views, and Adventist Health Care was horrible to deal with. Their phone wait times for the billing office are horrible, and I was told that I had to call back to learn the outcome of my appeal. Customer service oriented? Not. So the American College of Radiology allows for more views than Adventist Health Care does, so there is no need to switch to a diagnostic other than to charge more money! Because I was persistent, I finally got to a… supervisor at AHC. She looked in my file and found that there was no documented reason for the switch to a diagnostic mammogram, and the bill was forgiven. I'm writing this in the hope that if this happens to another woman, she will fight the good fight. I'm tired of greed and bureaucracy in the health care industry. AHC was like a brick wall until I finally got through to this supervisor. Shame on you!!
