Summary
About Callie Bushong
Before taking the plunge and getting her nursing degrees, Callie Bushong, NP, worked as a cosmetologist and massage therapist in Chicago and Colorado. “I am so glad that I finally was able to believe in myself long enough to go because it has provided so many opportunities for our family,” she says.
Callie is a graduate of Goshen College, Goshen, IN, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her Master of Science in Nursing. She chose oncology as her specialty after working with an underserved population in a clinic.
Her approach to practicing medicine is to always listen and be open minded. “What may seem ‘easy’ for someone else or common sense may be something that someone else has never ever thought of,” she says.
From her patients, Callie learned that so many people have barriers to getting even the simplest things accomplished, but when given adequate resources and opportunities they are so resilient.
Callie wants her patients to know that …she listens and helps anyway she can. “I want them to know that I go home worried about them all night,” she says. “You are more than just a patient to me; I will always want what is best for you.”
In her own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My parents. They both worked hard and made sure that our childhoods were filled with memories that I now cherish.
What was your first job growing up? Steak N’ Shake in Dunlap.
What is your favorite food? Movie? My “go to” is always going to pizza, but I also love sushi. I have given up trying to watch grown up movies because of my kids. Currently it is watching Lilo & Stitch on repeat and most things on Disney.
What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? I always loved participating in arts. I loved photography and started off in Chicago at an art school; I was bored in history and math.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? I would love to be able to sit down and eat dinner with both sets of my grandparents.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? I love being with family and friends that have turned into family.
What are your hobbies, interests? Vacationing to new and old destinations, good book series, watching a good TV series, preferably comedies, soaking up sunshine, watching my kids grow and having fun in the summers enjoying being young.
Do you have pets? We have one Goldendoodle named Maggie and three cats: Max, Miso and Karma.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I don’t think it’s a secret that I love to travel, but I also love the planning. I love relaxing on a beach and seeing a good sunrise or sunset.
