Dr. Fernandez is a superb doctor: he is caring, honest, direct and , though a surgeon, cautious, and comfortable with a wait-and-see approach when appropriate. An outstanding expert in his field , he explains problems and issues clearly and with warmth and humanity ( and a dash of humor and humility) . There is no arrogance or paternalism-- just a terrific doctor.

I owe the past six years of my life to this wonderfully, skilled surgeon who saved my life in performing a very successful Whipple operation. Truly the closest to God Almighty in making miracles happen. Not a day goes by that I don't bless this beloved doctor - he made the most difficult time in my life one of the easiest by far. If you are fortunate to have Dr. Fernandez as your surgeon, know how blessed you are to have the very best surgeon in the world in treating and yes, curing pancreatic cancer. People come from all over the world to see him and how blessed was I that he practiced right here in Boston.

Excellent doctor but dealing with his ditzy practice manager, Linda is a challenge. Never answers the phone and calls you 2 days later with an attitude. Bad for business.

My husband was in the best hands with his whipple procedure. He is so dedicated and compassionate and very honest. I would highly recommend him.

I have to say I do have mixed feelings about him. I was having horrible pain and was afraid I was going to lose my job. My own Surgeon said to go see him for a 2nd opinion as he was the best around. SO I arranged the appointment. Getting there was easy enough although I had some confusion on where he was as MGH is huge, CHeck-in and everything went smoothly and I didn't wait longer than 10 minutes if that to see him. So I get one of the students which is OK I expect that.. and he asks me when was my first ERCP. Well I have never had one as my surgeon thinks my insides are so messed up it would just trigger and acute episode and accomplish nothing.but the students says.. well the first thing we have to do is schedule a ERCP. SO the big man himself comes in and he has zero personality. Not pleasant in anyway. This happened before with doctors as they usually do not know my case or me. So anyway he asks about the ERCP and some other info.. and I am waiting for him to get… to the spleen issue but it is obvious he did no preparation for my appointment. His suggestion was that I had a pseudocyst... that it should be drained and then I should get off pain meds. That is it. Goodbye. Nothing about the spleen even though I kept asking him he never responded to my queries. So my surgeon, who knows this guy rather well, asks me about the visit and what he had to say and I didn't know what to say as I didn't want to wound the guys reputation in hi peers eyes. So I was ok I said they did this and that and I told him what they recommended and he suggested I get it done at MGH as they have better equipment. My guy says he will follow up with the other DR. So I get a call that they want to do a spleenectomy... which is what I had gone to him to talk about. My surgeon said he went over some of the finer details of my case and they both agreed that removing my spleen and maybe some of my pancreas was a good thing. So in the end he performed well and I put it up to him just being busy and all that but that really is no excuse. I do feel though that if he were my surgeon he would have received me in a different way.

Recommended to me by other top surgeons at MGH. A Doctor's Doctor. Highly revered and respected by all professionals that I came in contact with while in the hospital. Accurately diagnosed my pancreatic tumor type and successfull removed without any post operative complications. The procedure was a complete success. In addition to being a highly skilled surgeon, Dr. Ferandez is a compassionate down to earth gentlemen who made himself available at all hours to respond to questions. Most highly recommended.
