Dr. Carol Bowden Hollan, MD

As a very young child, Dr. Hollan was intrigued with both art and science. By the age of six, she was drawing people "to make them look better," checking out books from the public library to study anatomy and physiology to improve her drawings. When a family member suggested she could become a medical illustrator or a plastic surgeon, she set her sights on medical school. She later attended Florida Presbyterian College and the University of Florida College of Medicine, graduating from medical school in 1973. Dr. Hollan then trained in internal medicine and opened a private practice in Potsdam, New York where she became board-certified in family practice.

Dr. Hollan moved to California in 1977 to complete an internship in surgery, a residency in orthopedic surgery, and a final residency in plastic surgery at UCSD, San Diego School of Medicine in 1983. She then opened her private practice, becoming the first female surgeon to be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in …San Diego County, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

As a female plastic surgeon, Dr. Hollan offers a unique perspective. Both male and female patients comment on Dr. Hollans extraordinary communication skills, engaging personality, artistry, and high level of integrity. She is a delicate balance of scientist and artist, nurturer and educator, with an eye for detail and a committment to patient satisfaction. She personally stands for committment and possibility for the growth and well-being of others. Dr. Hollan continuously updates her professional knowledge and skills by attending conferences and seminars. She is equally as diligent in her personal growth and developement, and continues to be involved with Landmark Education advanced seminars.

Because of her exceptional surgical skills, her ability to relate authentically, and her humility, she has a rather extensive fan club of patients, staff, doctors. nurses, and other health care professionals in the community. Nurses at one hospital told her jokingly that they were going to have sweatshirts printed that declare themselves "Friends of Hollan" because of their admiration for her.

Dr. Hollan maintains privileges at Sharp Memorial Hospital, Mary Birch Hospital for Women, Grossmont Hospital, UCSD University Hospital, and Thornton Hospital.
