Dr. Caroline V. Caperton, MD

I took my daughter to Dr. Caperton on her pediatrician’s recommendation and we are so happy with her and her staff. She has a cheerful disposition and a sharp mind. On our first visit, she spent hours with us discussing symptoms, concerns, and history. Her knowledge of her field is impressive and she is capable of explaining the immune system to a child and to a parent with ease. On follow up visits, she has never failed to answer every question, listen to every concern, and show us warmth and kindness. Today, my daughter had her second food challenge there and those take hours. Her entire staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to see that my daughter was well taken care of and entertained (no easy feat for a toddler cooped up at a doctor’s office). We seriously love Dr. Caperton and her staff, especially Amber.

Where to even start? Man, everything about this Dr. visit was just cringe worthy, so let me start from the very beginning. We get there at 2pm, with not a soul in the waiting room, but we do not get seen until sometime AFTER 4. That was the very least of my concerns with this visit though. When Dr. Caperton finally makes her appearance, she burst through the door apologizing for the wait, overly enthusiastic, shaking each of our hands and entertaining our babies with her silliness, very animated and expressive with her hand movements. (Not an issue, just a glimpse of the personality type we are dealing with). We sit down with her and she begins to asks questions about my daughters past and present issues. The unusual ticks and seizure like movements she developed immediately after her 6 month shots, her breathing issues and swollen tonsils and adenoids, the eczema and staph that has riddled her little body over the years, recurrent pneumonia despite having had the Pneumococcal… vaccine, the lumps that formed on her chest plate, hair loss, constant sickness since she was an infant. Dr. Caperton is mowing it all over in her head, going through my daughters records, writing and narrowing down what could be causing all of these symptoms or what kind of autoimmune disorder this could be. She sees in my daughters records that we recently refused her 4 year immunizations. She, right then and there, decided that my husband and I are complete and utter MORONS and told us that “It looks like it's time to have her shots!” She looks at her titters tests and goes on to say "It looks like her body has reacted perfectly with vaccinations, she has immunity for blah blah blah & blah BUT she needs her 4 year boosters!" Before I can even say anything she decides that now is the best time to have "STORY TIME!" Because remember, she just found out that my husband and I are idiots and we need the break down in drawings with a cute little story to go along of course. She starts drawing circles on her paper "You see these cute little circles are antibodies!! Our bodies need these antibodies to fight off pathogens! This big scary square is a pathogen! Rawr!” I let her go on with this cute little story for a while because, although it was incredibly offensive that she just assumed we needed this 3rd grade science lesson, my husband and daughter seemed to be thoroughly enjoying it, so I humored them. When I had finally had enough, I took a deep breath, I have decided to not become too defensive while dealing with people in situations like this, so I kindly remind her that all of my daughters issues that we are dealing with all started shortly after receiving vaccines. First the head bobbing and jerking and respiratory issues, I kept vaccinating and then more symptoms appear each time. I ask her if there is any way any of this could be caused by the vaccines. She looks at me and so matter of factly says "OH NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT!" So I say "Then why are so many of her symptoms labelled in the vaccine inserts?" She has no answer and quickly changes the subject. I say "Why is my vaccinated child so sick but my son is not? He is completely unvaccinated and 100% healthy." She then throws her hands up while jumping backwards saying "ew, if my patients knew I had an unvaccinated child in here they would not be happy." This of course makes me EXTREMELY uncomfortable but I still fight back the urge to react out of anger and I say "Yes it probably would... Because most people like to believe unvaccinated children are walking around spreading diseases they don't even have." She mentioned something about measles being a disease and I was sure to correct her that measles is actually just a very mild infection. She shockingly agreed with me about that and then very quickly changed the subject once again. She points at my son who is playing with our keys, because we have been here for HOURS and it's all that would keep him happy, and she says "meanwhile he's over here chewing on metal.” While laughing and shaking her head. I take the keys from my baby and just stare at her and she says "I'm sorry for being so snarky, I'm sorry... I really do support your beliefs. I shouldn't act like that." I just smile and say "We are used to it.” Before we leave I ask her "So.. Do you think she has an immune disorder?" She says "Yes she does seem to have an autoimmune disorder but I need time to go over everything before we get any tests done and I'm not entirely comfortable keeping her as my patient if you are refusing to vaccinate her.." I say "Well, immunocompromised children aren't supposed to be vaccinated, so why are you insisting we keep vaccinating?" She says "She can be vaccinated just no live vaccines." WHAT!? Not to even mention I had already pointed out the issues she started having IMMEDIATELY after each vaccine! I even pointed out that all her symptoms are listed in the VACCINE INSERTS! She still was adamant that I vaccinate my immunocompromised/vaccine injured child! At no point was she going to tell me my immunocompromised child COULDN'T be injected with a LIVE vaccine. If I had not already been well-knowledged on this topic, I would have went and gotten my child who is very susceptible to disease and infection a live vaccine and she could have DIED! This is MALPRACTICE and it is completely UNACCEPTABLE! She also mentioned that she's very provax because she's a "Cali girl" so I guess this makes her completely biased view completely OKAY! No need to look into the real issue at hand here. Why? Because she's from California y'all and Vaccines are totally "safe and effective." Says her. Vaccine inserts? and vaers who? She is an immunologist and is completely unaware of the actual risks. I told her had I been made aware of the ingredients and risks prior to vaccinating I would have NEVER vaccinated from the start. She has treated me for my immune deficiency for the past year or so. She had to conform to the system of where she was as she was doing her fellowship in immunology. She is respectful, kind and caring. Hope I can see her once she is done with her fellowship.
