Charles Liu, M.D., Ph.D., attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where he studied Chemical Engineering. After graduation, he received his PhD in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Rice University, Houston, TX before attending medical school at Yale University. He completed his neurosurgery residency at USC Keck School of Medicine. He is currently appointed as a physician specialist in neurosurgery at LAC-USC Medical Center, as well as Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery and Apuzzo Professorship for Advanced Neurosurgery at the USC Keck School of Medicine. He serves as the Surgical Director of the USC Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and Co-Director of the USC Pituitary Center. He is an integral member of the USC Cerebrovascular Team. He is also Chief of Neurosurgery and Spine at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Medical Center and has a faculty appointment as Guest Professor in Neurosurgery at Hua Shan Hospital, Fudan University School of Medicine in Shanghai. …His principal research interests relate to restorative neurosurgery. Specifically, this involves elucidating strategies to restore function to the nervous system after injury due to trauma, stroke, or neurodegenerative disease. These strategies include surgical, technological (ie. advanced neuroprostheses, robotics), as well as biological (ie. stem cell transplantation). His efforts involve active collaborations with researchers at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, the California Institute of Technology, the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University, the Zilkha Neurogenetics Institute of USC, the Bill and Sue Gross Stem Cell Center of UC Irvine, Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine, and Temple University. He has won numerous awards for his research and has contributed extensively to the published literature. He has also given numerous lectures nationally and internationally. He recently received a $1 million research grant to study neurostimulation and temporal lobe epilepsy with collaborators in neurology and biomedical engineering. He currently serves as Assistant Editor on the Editorial Board of WORLD NEUROSURGERY, the journal. His clinical interests include epilepsy surgery, pituitary and anterior skull-base surgery, cerebrovascular surgery, minimally invasive strategies to treat deep seated brain tumors in eloquent locations, and spinal neurosurgery. He also serves as a principal neurosurgical consultant for the NCAA Division I USC Trojans.

He is always running late and rushing, however I know for a fact that he knows his patient's cases really well before going to surgery. He is present for every single one of his surgeries despite working with residents.

Dr. Liu made my husband and I feel comfortable right away! I went in thinking all I needed was a new battery for my VNS, but what I really needed was a Vagus a Nerve Stimulator revision! I was so glad Dr. Liu saw what I did in the x-Rays, and was as concerned as I was. He is kind, caring, listens and explains things so that we were more at ease and comfortable with the surgery. The day of the surgery, he again took time to explain everything to us, and made sure he was fresh to do the surgery on me, as he ended up having another surgery before mine that was very involved and went long that morning. Every appointment I had with him post-surgery was great! I healed easily and without any infections. I am truly thankful for the people at Cyberonics for helping me locate him. I also appreciate his office staff and all the help they gave me.

Dr. Liu is the kindest, most knowledgeable doctor I have ever had an experience with. He makes going to the doctor a pleasure and despite the difficult times patient is experiencing, When i had surgery with Dr. Liu, he made me feel comfortable and safe. Dr. Liu makes you feel comfortable. ABSOLUTELY THE BEST DOCTOR EVER!!!!!

While I appreciate and am grateful for Dr. Liu for his skill and treatment, I wish I was more prepared or had my brain surgery done elsewher than USC. I felt I was misled on information prior (To get me in to surgery to add to his number of surgeries Done which I hear about everytime) The staff (Administration) Is very non patient friendly from placing my disablity papers in another patients chart, telling me it was sent, not following up on claims, not helpful at all with after care issues (Down right rude) Very disappointing from lack of professionalism, and told not their job. Just be prepared for having to do alot of your own follow up with insurance, and no call backs with issues (Pain)

Dr. Lui is exellent not only was my surgery a success, but he is also a very kind doctor. This helps when you are going through something such as brain surgery.
