Dr. Charles Maltz

Telephone visit. Needed permission for colonoscopy. Call was on time and approval was given promptly. Doctor made referral for procedure. No difficulties.

He asked, "Why are you here?" An odd question since I made an appointment for a gastroenterologist as instructed by my gynecologist. I told him that I had a ColoGuard like four or five years ago - have lost count due to the pandemic and I was unable to access preventative healthcare. He asked if I wanted ColoGuard again. I said I would as it was an easy test and I have no cancer in my family. He then informed me that he 'didn't do ColoGuard'. He only did colonoscopies and I needed to go find myself a general practitioner in six months, one year, two years, five years, whatever. There was no hurry even though I know that this is inaccurate given my age. I asked him if he would please call in a prescription for the ColoGuard as so many years had passed and he refused as it wasn't "what he did". I was confused as he is a gastroenterologist and, by definition, I understand that includes the colon and cancer screening. Unfortunately, unless you are going in for a colonoscopy, any other form… of preventive care for cancer is below him. I am guessing this is some sort of medical classism. They won't call in a prescription for cancer screening if it is 'below them'. He was done with me if I was not going to sign up for a colonoscopy. He wasn't even going to refer me to another doctor. I could go out there and look for one, no hurry, six months to five years, or whatever. His elitism was more important than my health and my day. Let's review. The copay was $25. The train was $24. The Uber was $32. The cab back to the train station was $20. All the hours I spent getting to and from the appointment were irrelevant as he only does one kind of cancer screening, and if you aren't signing up, you are kicked to the curb.

I was treated by Dr. Maltz and due to his extreme negligence, I ended up almost dying of Sepsis while under his care. I had a blocked cystic duct and should have had an emergency ECRP but instead he made me wait over a week to have the procedure. By the end of the week, I had extreme blood poisoning from backed up bile, constant chills, and I was seeing white lights. My body was so close to death that I urinated on myself and could no longer move. I truly believe that I was very close to death. This doctor is sadistic, has no empathy, and shouldn't be practicing.

Cartoonish Hollywood caricatures of cruel, dismissive, know-it-all docs don't do this guy justice. Ignored what I and my GI doc of nearly a decade told him and concluded that I was faking symptoms, as he later wrote in my records. Declined to order an exam my doctor was recommending. Made the hospital the most dangerous place for me to be sick in. Did it all with a smug smile on his face. A discredit to his profession—and to hack screenwriters everywhere.

The doctor took me early (I arrived an hour early b/c i came from out of state), plus he was very knowledgeable and helpful... i would highly recommend this doctor if you need an experienced doctor wit ha great bedside manner...

This doctor cut me off while I tried to reasonably and quickly describe symptoms, palpated my abdomen rapidly and then dismissed the fact that I reacted painfully to every spot he pressed, then insulted my intelligence by not describing the mechanics behind what I was feeling. When I mentioned my most worrying symptom, rather than hear me out, he interrupted, "It's just stress." When I told him this was frustrating and that I was hurting, he dismissively said, "Why are you frustrated with me? I didn't cause your pain." This doctor should retire and let someone who cares about being thorough, patient, and helpful take his place.

I also needed anesthesia for my procedure, Dr. Maltz said "I know, you need anesthesia, all taken care of, no problem". The negative experience that the girl above had, I had with a different physician. So I have no answer except maybe that's how they react when they are caught off guard and unprepared. But I thank God I have had nothing but great experiences with Doctor Maltz starting in 2010 by meeting him in the er for vomiting blood with no explanation, through now.He has been great! I count on him exclusively.Sincerely,a very grateful patient.
