Dr. Chaya Guha Bhuvaneswaran, MD

I just thought she was amazing, and I told my friends the same. First off -- she's really straightforward. She will tell you, even over the phone, if she isn't able to provide what you're looking for -- and then, free of charge, she'll provide referrals to other providers. Second -- once you're in session, you feel extremely safe and supported. She truly cares. If you have called her to set up care, she may take awhile to outreach you as a potential new patient, because she accepts new patients slowly and thoughtfully. That said, if you want a 15 minute med check, her visits are not that (they're substantial enough so she can make the best recommendations and have a clear idea of diagnosis). She's great. I recommend!

I am the parent of a young man who was hospitalized during a first episode of psychosis. One of then most painful aspects of this hospitalization was how our son voiced racial stereotypes as he struggled with the psychosis. We knew he was back with us and through the episode, and responding to treatment, when the anger stopped and he stopped using racially derogatory words for diverse people. We were moved by Dr. B never wavered in her kindness to him even though he would curse at her and other health workers of color. We saw this year that anti-Asian hate can come from many different people (including Black, Latinx and other people who were involved in the physical attacks against Asians, including Asian elders). When our son was hospitalized 3 years ago, with Dr. B treating him, it was heart-wrenching to see him angry while psychotic and such a relief when he got so much better. We knew she would persevere and advocate for him, and that she saw the person underneath the psychosis. We… cannot thank her enough.

I was reluctant to get any form of psychiatric treatment because of the stigma. I want to become a lawyer eventually and I was afraid that I would be perceived differently if I agreed to any care. However, my depression got severe enough so that I knew I needed support. Dr. B was kind, caring, and spent a lot of time with me as I thought through how to solve all the different issues and create some kind of positive routine for myself once I left the inpatient. It takes a lot of courage to accept treatment but it has changed my life and my conversations in the hospital with Dr. B were what got me started.

What I really appreciated was that she seemed really at ease with me even though the things I told her are things I am not proud of having done in my life or chances I wasted to be with my kids again or times I really lost my temper for no reason. I felt like I could just tell her and she would listen and be there for me...then try to suggest a next step toward my goals. I also liked her blend of relaxed/ down to earth plus very up on science and well-read. She is just likable and accepting. I could tell she cares.

I was grateful she not only listened to me, let me leave the hospital to take care of my job, but then called me to make sure I had reached where I needed to go and made sure I connected safely with my next doctor's appointment. She made me feel this was all par for the course and just a part of routine care...even though I have had many doctors and it is not routine but excellent.

She has earned an excellent rep among my other providers for collaborating closely with them. She really cares. You can see that in the attention to detail as well as willingness to be thorough and try her best for you. I felt safe with her and found her empathetic and honest.

I will never forget the day, when I was ill, that Dr B looked out for me, as a new nursing graduate, and suggested I go to the ER because of how much I was struggling with pain. It turned out to be something that required bed rest but I was so busy caring for my patents, I wouldn't have taken the time for myself. Dr B saw me and took that time to interact with me as a human. As a nurse on a very acute unit I always trusted her to respond to our calls for help, to maintain unit presence, to promptly help patients. She was not only devoted to the care, I felt a sense of loyalty toward me and other nurses when we needed her.

She devoted time to compassionately caring for and listening to me and my family. She was thorough and diligent about following up our needs. She was compassionate and caring.

She sat with us multiple times to go over our questions and provided as much information as we needed as well as compassionate listening and caring. She was thorough and smart. I would definitely return to her unit.

Satisfied with care and would return.
