Dr. Chiaki Dupre Gauntt, MD

Dr Gauntt did cataract procedures on both my eyes a year ago. My vision was ruined. I am unable to read the fine print on my med bottles, ingredient labels on foods, or even some books and magazines --not even with corrective lenses. After she discovered, prior to the operation, the irregularities in my cornea, she did not adequately explain --or explain at all-- the risks this circumstance introduced into this normally routine procedure, or the ways in which the procedure might actually aggravate my corneal irregularities. Nor did Dr Gauntt adequately explain the options for adjusting my near and distance vision in the course of the cataract procedure --so that I went into it without having given informed consent. Had I known then what I discovered afterward, I would not have had the cataract procedures done at all. I've since been to two other ophthalmologists and three optometrists, and now have an appt scheduled with yet a fourth ophthalmologist. None of them has so far been able… to correct my vision. Much of the difficulty originates with Dr Gauntt's poor command of spoken or written English. Next time I encounter a surgeon with such weak communication skills, I'll insist on a different doctor. Communication is crucial in all medical practice --even, as it turns out, surgery. I have a malpractice complaint pending. Meanwhile, stay away from this doctor.

Since childhood I have essentially been blind in my left eye with the ability to only perceive light and darkness through that eye, and more recently nothing at all. Dr. Gauntt removed a very â??solidâ?? cataract from my left eye and implanted a lens, positioning it to focus and take advantage of a small part of my retina that actually functioned. Although severely myopic, for the first time in 60 years I can see images with my left eye. I am still shedding tears of joy and gratitude. Dr. Chiaki Dupre Gauntt skills, I believe, are remarkable. She is a sweetheart, caring and very professional. I felt at ease and in good hands during the procedure and trusted her implicitly. I highly recommend her. I feel blessed that she was my surgeon.
