I am new to the area and only saw Dr. Okeke once. During that time, she was pleasant and comforting, no issues there. I scheduled this appointment specifically as a physical/wellness check, I told her I needed a specific TB testing for hospital volunteering, she said no problem we can do it. All was great, and I felt like lucky to have found her.
Then I go get my blood drawn, in their office. The two phlebotomists were super nice, bubbly, and funny, which I always relate to; however, one of them was either new or in training because she had to poke me twice, blood was leaking on my arm etc. They did apologize, and I remained nice. I figured hey it happens, we all have to learn and start somewhere. No biggie still at this point, even though I am used to smoother experiences. Upon leaving, I scheduled a follow-up appointment for 2 weeks.
A few after that, they call me that they scheduled me wrong because the doctor does not work past 10am on Fridays, and my appt was at noon.… That's when I started to get a bit frustrated. It's not that an emergency happened, which can happen to any of us, it's that her schedule did not cover that time, and they should have known that when they made the appt in the first place. So I decided this office is not for me, and I told them I want my lab results printed and handed out to me, even at a cost to me, with no further appointments to be set. My intention was to go somewhere else. They told me 3-4 times they can't give me the results, and I had to really push and be firm and remind them that it is the law; I am the patient and I own my information, I can ask for a copy anytime. Finally they gave in.
So I go buy to pick up the results, and I find out that they did not perform the TB test as the doctor promised. The phlebotomist said "I didn't know, you should have told me because we don't do them here". The doctor included it on her order for the lab. I trusted the doctor to take care of this, it wasn't up to me to tell her anything.
Then I decide to ask why they charged me a copay on my first visit since it was a wellness visit. They are in network, and I was simply going in for a wellness check/physical, which does not warrant a copay. They flat out lied that they don't know, that it was an insurance thing, that other patients have asked too, and to take it up to my insurance. I call my insurance, they say it's not acceptable, they call the office themselves. Come to find out they charge a CONSULTATION FEE equal to your copay, and they only code your visit as a wellness check/physical only after you've seen the doctor a few times up to one year. Say what?! The insurance representative confirmed that this is an office policy specific to this doctor. They never informed me of this fee otherwise I would have never gone! It's not about the $25 it's about the principle. I go through my insurance, why charge me extra just because you want to?
The last straw came when I called a final time to confirm/clarify the payment drama, they picked up, muffled the phone, and I hear them say "it's her again, she's crazy". Then they hung up. I called again, and then I was really worked up. Never called names, my tone was elevated, for a good reason since they have been so frustrating, disrespectful, and unprofessional, and she kept talking on top of me. She said she will discuss with the doctor, call back and then never did.
Why call me crazy? Because I know my rights? My husband is a physician, so I know A LOT about good ethical practices, and, although they have the right to set whatever rules in their private practice, they have the obligation to INFORM patients, to RESPECT them, and to act professionally. They admitted no responsibility whatsoever, and then made me feel inappropriate for their own shortcomings? KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AND NEVER LET PROVIDERS AND MEDICAL STAFF ABUSE YOU! Doctors are healers first and foremost, and there are many who do not know the basics of human psychology, relating, and healing.
