Dr. Christian Carlos Apfel, MD

Anesthesia Dr. Christian Apfel is an anesthesiologist at UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus and the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at Mount Zion. He is internationally recognized for his research to improve patient recovery and perioperative outcomes, in particular to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting after surgery. He leads the Perioperative Clinical Research Core in the UCSF Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care that's studying treatments such as non-invasive spinal decompression for chronic low back pain and capsaicin to reduce pain after total hip arthroplasty. Apfel earned a medical degree at the University of Giessen Medical School in Germany and was trained in anesthesia, intensive care medicine and emergency medicine at the University of Wuerzburg Medical School in Germany. He is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, European Society of Anaesthesiologists and Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer …Anaesthesiologie and Intensivemedizin. He is an associate professor of anesthesia and perioperative care at UCSF.
