Dr. Christopher Dean Beaty, MD

Dr. Beaty is one of the finest doctors I've ever had take care of me and he takes as much time as needed at each appointment to discuss whatever is on my mind and whatever my issues are. I changed to him from another Pulmonologist and have never regretted my decision to do so. He is top notch and I respect him and his decisions in my care very much.

Unfortunately, after dealing with a very good pulmonologist in the ICU when I was put on a ventilator for a bad asthma attack, Dr. Beaty took over my care as my pulmonologist to complete my discharge from the hospital 2 days later. Dr. Beaty has very poor bedside manners and seemed to avoid giving clear answers to questions by my husband or me. He just walked into my hospital room and without introducing himself just stated I would probably not like to hear this, but he disagrees with my established diagnosis of asthma. In doing so, he had the audacity to stand in front of me and make statements like "everybody can fake wheeze" and then continued to demonstrate it by making such sounds. This however proves he did not familiarize himself with my original presentation, because I was admitted to the ER with respiratory failure, with the ER report stating "very decreased breath sounds bilaterally, but no wheezes or crackles". So besides the point that wheezing is completely irrelevant… since I did not wheeze, he is essentially accusing me of "fake wheezing" whilst being mostly unconscious due to respiratory failure. Furthermore, when he asked why I thought I had asthma I stated that past provocative asthma testing was positive, which he responded to with "well I'd like to see those results". In essence, he disagrees with my regular pulmonologists' diagnosis, the care of the paramedics on scene, the course of action by the Emergency Department of the hospital, and the course of treatment by my ICU pulmonologist the first 2 days. In further talking to him it became clear that he truly had not familiarized himself with how I initially presented upon arrival at the ER. The more facts my husband brought up in favor of asthma, the more he seemed to change his mind (without admitting to it). During my husband's questioning it became obvious that his meme was changing from "you do not have asthma" to "I cannot exclude asthma in your case". Yet, even admitting he could not exclude asthma he would not prescribe me any discharge medications as my initial ICU pulmonologist had told my husband. Unfortunately, at the time of the event my regular pulmonologist was out of town. However, when I got to see her for my follow-up she said she felt it was negligent at best to not prescribe something to prevent a possible rebound asthma attack. She furthermore said that his discharge diagnosis took "quite a few liberties", given that he does not have my medical history, questioned past provocative testing confirming my asthma diagnosis, and basically disagreed with her, the paramedics, the hospital ER staff, and my first ICU pulmonologist. I agree with a previous review that overall it seems that Dr. Beaty is more concerned with being right than treating a patient in their best interest. His whole change of diagnosis is even more questionable knowing that he is working for the same group as my first ICU pulmonologist, who has about 10 years more experience and treated me at my initial admission to the hospital (thus had a picture of my symptoms and description by my husband of what happened.) I would not recommend Dr. Beaty to family or friends.

More worried about being seen as right than about helping patient.
