My car was totaled and I was injured (whiplash, bruises, sprains, cuts and imbedded glass particulates) when an illegal, unlicensed driver in a Dodge Ram pickup rear-ended my vehicle that was stopped at a red light. A doctor at an urgent care clinic advised me to go to an ER for a complete evaluation and CAT scan, so I went to St. Luke's at The Vintage ER where I saw Dr. Fedoruk. What a total waste of time and money ($1200 ER visit + $400 Physician's fee) for essentially NOTHING. The nurse at registration was fine, but when I was taken to a room, I sat for over an hour, (and there was only one other person ahead of me and no extreme/typical ER scene.) It seems like they were running the meter, probably claiming to be doing "evaluation/observation," by just letting me sit there indefinitely. Finally, someone tapped on the door, opened it a crack, but didn't see me sitting there in a chair--[I chose not to get on the stupid hospital bed complete with a hole in the sheet exposing the… bare mattress underneath.] Finally, I ventured out and approached what appeared to be a nurse's station and told the woman sitting there that someone had tapped on the door, opened it slightly, but never came in. She said she'd done that and thought nobody was in the room. So, back in the room, this 'brilliant' ER nurse who didn't have the sense to actually open the door all the way and actually look into the room to see the patient sitting there, taped some sort of oxygen sensor to my finger (more meter running, the registration nurse had already done an oximetry reading,) and took my blood pressure (more meter running... the registration nurse had already taken my blood pressure.) I continued waiting more when Dr. Fedoruk finally showed up. He decided since the airbag didn't deploy (well, it wouldn't necessarily have been expected to when the car was hit from behind... it was enough to knock me over a full-size car length into an intersection, and this Dodge 2500 Ram was going full speed and didn't slow down) that no imaging was necessary. Then, after Dr. Fedoruk had handled my feet in shoes (to check legs' neurological function) he was going to check my neck, back, and shoulders without changing his exam gloves or washing his hands! GROSS! UNSANITARY! BAD CLINICAL PRACTICE! Shoes are unsanitary; I had walked from the parking lot, in the hospital hallways, in the hospital restroom! No sensible person would want soles of shoes on their bare skin, especially not the skin of their neck or head or face, and it is disgusting and disrespectful for a doctor to handle shoes and then plan on using the same gloves to examine a patient. So, I politely asked him to please change into fresh gloves before checking my neck and back. He complied, but I'm sure he was annoyed and miffed that I had the audacity to ask the almighty MD to do so. I'd hate to think what he'd do in a situation when a patient might be unconscious or feeling too bad to notice his lack of good, basic sanitary practice. I also hate to think of the infections he might cause, especially if someone had open wounds, deep cuts, etc. Dr. Fedoruk said he'd write me prescriptions for a painkiller and muscle relaxant. It's over a month later and I'm still having problems with headaches, ringing in my ears from nerve damage from the whiplash, neckache, backache... I didn't receive proper care or treatment in this situation. Before this negative experience, I thought St. Luke's was supposed to be a good hospital and expected more of its ER and ER physician, but I don't plan on ever going back and would not recommend St. Luke's or Dr. Fedoruk to anyone.
