Dr. Christopher John Karns, DO

I was admitted to the Westfield Memorial Hospital for an epileptic seizure and the experience I had with Dr. Karns was so unprofessional and traumatic that I will never go back to this hospital in my life. I was no longer seizing by the time I arrived, but I was highly postictal, meaning that I could not speak or move very much, but I could understand what was going on around me to some degree. I'm not sure if the nurses thought I was on drugs or mentally disabled, but even after the friend that brought me to the hospital told them that I had just had a seizure and could potentially have another one based on my seizure history, they parked me in a wheelchair in a hallway to "get a room ready." When they brought me to the room, one of the nurses asked my name, but I couldn't respond. She said "is that all you can do?" because I was unable to speak. Clearly annoyed with me, she then started taking off my clothes with two male nurses and two female nurses in the room. I am a female and… had no bra on, so my breasts were exposed to four people, two of which were males. I could see what was happening but I could not move or tell them to stop, so I started crying. One of the female nurses, who seemed to be the head nurse, told me to "stop crying and give me your arms" to get the sweatshirt off. They put a gown on me after getting my clothes off, did not set up any ECG monitors, did not take my blood pressure or vitals, did not administer any medications, and did not try to make sure I was comfortable. They did administer Ativan once I had been awake and talking for about 15 minutes. After being in the hospital for about0 minutes and receiving very little care, Dr. Karns asked "do you want to leave?" without even doing a coordination test, without looking at my pupils, and without even listening to my lungs and heart. I have been to this hospital for seizures 3 previous times and I have always received amazing care. Dr. Karns did not ask what happened, did not ask how long I have had epilepsy or any of the other standard questions, and then told me he was reporting my license even though I had gone through that process before and had been deemed safe to drive by a neurologist. I can also tell each time I am going to have a seizure, but he did not even ask that. The head nurse and Dr. Karns were so rude, as if I was nuisance to them, even though there were no other patients in the hospital and I was experiencing a medical emergency. I had been seizing for a total of 18 minutes before they saw me, and they treated me like an animal. It was traumatic and I would never recommend this hospital or Dr. Karns to anyone.
