He spends much of the time on a laptop with records. He always listens to me. He always seems rushed. He discussed maybe upping a dosage of one of my medications because I'd gained 4 pounds.

Dr. C. Mertes is probably the best doctor I have had at Carilion for my general health care; he is compasionate, helpful, thorough (checks all my records and updates them when necessary) and has common sense--a great addition to your staff and a great human being.

Dr. Mertes was seeing my in-laws, and we discovered him to be wise, considerate, thorough. So we switched to him, and have been very satisfied. Takes the time to hear your complaints, and ask appropriate questions, not the few minutes others allow. This means he runs a little late on his appointments, but he is definitely worth the wait. Bring a favorite book.

Dr. Mertes is an excellent caretaker in that he not only investigates symptoms thoroughly but also takes the time to speak to his patients about diagnoses, subsequent care and lifestyle changes. While I sometimes have to wait to be seen, I do not mind as I know Dr. Mertes will give me the needed time.

Dr Mertes is an outstanding doctor. He has been our daughters' doctor since birth. He is compassionate, highly knowledgeable and gives you the time you need. I cannot recommend him highly enough (and I really dislike most doctors).

I call this office as little as I can, because their customer service is really bad. Calling with a question requires going through multiple phone menus, which I wouldn't mind so much except I rarely get a call back without several tries, and it's often days or even weeks after my initial call. And I really wish we could schedule routine appointments online so we could skip the whole lousy phone thing.Somebody really needs to look at their call/communication systems and fix this. How about doing some customer satisfaction surveys, Carilion?

Carilion is very fortunate to have Dr. Mertes on their staff, and I'm fortunate to have him as a doctor. It's worth the wait.

He IS the definition of a FAMILY DOCTOR... Smart, knowledgable, accurate in diagnosing, compassionate, caring, funny. He is overall a great doctor/human being. My family is lucky to have such a wonderful doctor on our side :)
