Dr. Christopher Francis Stubbs, MD

I had complications after surgery and my surgeon would not accept my word that I may have had an infection. For weeks afterward I saw my surgeon who ordered more x-rays, texted her on the hospital's messaging system and was continually told I will have pain in my recovery and she did not see any signs of an infection. I had a chills, a fever of 101.3F, and other signs of an infection but she said my temperature was not high enough (101.5F minimum guideline for the hospital) for an infection to be considered. At one point I went to the emergency room for intolerable pain. I had to use crutches again and eventually a wheelchair as it was very painful to walk. The ER staff treated me with more pain meds. No antibiotics. I sought a second opinion and began seeing Dr. Stubbs as my new primary physician. Dr. Stubbs spent at least 30 minutes with me in my initial visit, listening attentively. No other doctor in my past had spent so much time with me exploring all aspects of my… situation from medical to psychological. I don't believe he has any specialty in psychology but Dr. Stubbs treated me, the entire person and not just the narrow scope of why I initially sought another medical opinion. Dr. Stubbs agreed that in his opinion I did have a deep tissue infection from a surgery I had just 10 week prior. He prescribed antibiotics and my pain subsided by 90% after taking the first pill. I was so grateful and relieved that Dr. Stubbs saw beyond my surgery, x-rays and other medical records that did not point to an infection. To the best of his medical and professional ability Dr. Stubbs treated me. After the antibiotics had done their job, it was apparent my recovery from surgery months before had been affected by the infection and within weeks led to my leg breaking again. This had nothing to do with Dr. Stubbs but a result of my surgeon doing nothing for close to 3 months. After my leg broke I had to wait until my surgeon had another time slot to see me from late Friday night when it broke until Wednesday when I could see her. After taking x-rays again my surgeon looked at the x-rays and said she did not see a break. She only looked at the x-ray for 15 seconds at most and then said she "was disappointed". Well, I was disappointed also in the fact that enough time passed since I first alerted her about my infection that the surgery went awry. I retrieved a copy of the x-ray and studied it for hours. The compound break to my fibula was apparent to me as well as a break in the titanium strap holding my leg together. A third major surgery removed broken and infected stainless and titanium bracing and new hardware was installed. I was so afraid that my surgeon would be sloppy in this surgery because her tone and personality changed entirely with her "disappointed" comment. I did not want her to perform the surgery but had no other options immediately available. Dr. Stubbs continued to treat me for various things related to my surgery until the point he was no longer employed at the Audubon Medical Clinic. Dr. Stubbs literally saved my life or at least my foot by listening to me. No other doctor in my past was as compassionate, attentive and professional as doctor Stubbs. My new and current MD had only seen me a couple of times before throwing me under the bus. I understand he does not have a lengthy history with me but in a report he tagged about every issue that could be wrong or potentially go wrong just to cover his bases. If he said I was good to go and I had an accident then everyone thinks the MD is at fault. To protect himself I can no longer drive. No feeling. No compassion. Just business. Not like Dr. Stubbs. I am hoping that wherever Dr. Stubbs lands that he and his family consider the customer base he had touched in Audubon. I would gladly switch back to him if he set up his own practice in the Audubon area. I hope this review can reach Dr. Stubbs and encourage him to continue doing his best. He is a needed and valued physician. Please stay in Iowa. Thank you Dr. Stubbs. A grateful patient.
