Dr. Chuang-Kuo Wu, MD

Hope there is a rating lower than one star to quantify Dr. Wu’s quality. My office visit impression was unprofessional, inappropriate talk and not listen. If you really need a medical advice, he is not the one you should see.

This guy seems to think he is the only knowable person on Earth and talks down to everyone around him like they are worthless. His bedside manner is one of the worst I have ever seen. He doesn't explain anything, and he just leaves you hanging without really doing anything other than explore his own curiosity for his own gratification. Don't see this one.

We were on time for our 1:00 appt. We were put into an exam room at 1:00. We waited for 45 mins before I went out and told the nurses that we were still waiting. They said Dr. Wu was with another patient. I said we would wait a while longer. Fifteen mins later...an hour wait in the exam room...we walked out and told the nurses we were leaving and not to charge us for this visit. The nurse ran after us and said Dr. Wu just came out from seeing another patient and could see my husband now if we wanted to come back in. We did. Dr. Wu spent the first 5 mins explaining why he kept us waiting. He threw his nurses under the bus by saying they had scheduled us on top of another patient. No one had advised me of this. He then sat me in an inner waiting room while he gave my husband an exam. A few minutes later they came out. Dr. Wu did not have the courtesy to take us into an exam room. He stood there in the hallway and announced that my husband had declined and that there was no treatment… for Lewy Body Dementia. What kind of way is that to treat a patient? What kind of hope was he giving my husband? How kind was it to announce that in the hallway? Was he telling us that we are a waste of his valuable time? This was not our first unpleasant encounter with Dr. Wu. In the past month, he had denied a renewal of one of my husband's prescriptions. A prescription that you cannot just drop suddenly. No one from his office called me to let me know what to do. When I called his office the nurse told me that Dr. Wu said I had to get it from my husband's primary doctor. Why? She didn't prescribe it? She isn't treating my husband for Lewy Body Dementia. Why, all of a sudden, is she going to prescribe this type of medication to my husband? The nurse said she would try to talk to Dr. Wu and call me back. That was Day One. Day Two: I called again and the nurse told me a different story. This time, he didn't renew the prescription because he needs to see my husband first. Okay, was anyone going to let me know? My husband now has 3 pills left. How quickly can I get an appt with Dr. Wu? Not that quickly. She said she would talk to him again and call me back. Day Three: I called again. She said he could not renew the prescription because there were new rules passed. I said, he needs to refill this prescription and then make an appt to see my husband as quickly as possible. She said she would try to talk to him and call me back. Day Four: At this point, I am stressed to the max. My husband will take his last pill tonight. I call again and by this time I am highly upset. She says she will talk to the doctor again. In the meantime, I call my primary in the hopes that she will give my husband a prescription for the medication. Finally, at 4:10, the nurse calls me back and tells me that Dr. Wu has agreed to renew the prescription but that I have to come and pick it up. I said, "What time do you close?" "5:00" It is impossible for me to get from my house in Yorba Linda to the UCI campus at that time of day--especially on a Friday night--before the office closes. I told her she could fax the prescription. She said, "No, I had to pick it up." I told her whatever happened to my husband over the weekend was on Dr. Wu. She told me the prescription was there and it was up to me whether I picked it up or not. Great service, right? We hung up and I called my pharmacy. I asked them if they could accept a fax for this prescription. They said yes. I called the doctor's office back and of course, the nurse has left for the day. The receptionist remembered me, however, and tried to help me. She put me on hold and went back and talked to someone about what the pharmacy had said. In the meantime, I just happened to think to look it up on my computer. When she came back and told me they were sticking with the "I have to pick it up" plan, I told her I was looking at the DEA website and this drug was a level IV and could be faxed. I read it to her and told them they could look it up and that according to this website it was illegal for them to withhold my husband's medication. She put me on hold again and then came back and said they were phoning it into my pharmacy. Four days of stress for a caregiver of a spouse with Lewy Body Dementia. What kind of neurologist does this? Doesn't he know the kind of stress we live under on a daily basis? What kind of neurologist stands in the hallway and tells my husband that there is no treatment for his disease. He said so matter of fact, without a care for our feelings, at all. Anyone in the office could have heard him. I think Dr. Wu is a knowledgeable doctor but is seriously lacking in care for his patients. He will not be treating my husband in the future.

Dr. Wu spends the time necessary to answer your questions and has good "bedside" manner. Dr. Wu does not overbook and was able to diagnose my husbands condition. He also helped us with whatever paperwork the VA needed completed in order to get my husband on disability. He is a very nice man and a good doctor. Dr. Wu was the third neurologist that we saw and the best.
