Dr. Chunghwa Cathy Yi, MD

Upon the birth of my child, which Yi did not deliver, she came into my hospital room 15 hours later telling me that "babies born to mothers over their ideal body weight are more likely to be sickly" - I watched behind her as the nurse on duty's jaw dropped. I hadn't even held my baby yet, he was in the special care nursery on oxygen and covered in broken blood vessels. Mothers have enough misplaced guilt, I didn't need to be shamed for my weight while I was unsure of my baby's continued health. This was not the first comment she'd made about my weight, she had commented on my body every appointment I had with her during my pregnancy. Her comments reverberated in my mind for years to come, culminating in worsening my already long standing and serious eating disorder, which eventually nearly took my life (life flight, intubation, medically induced coma, very much near death). There are no words to describe how it feels to read other patients reviews that she is still shaming other… women. Steer clear of this provider. I would rather had rounds with providers I'd never met before than deal with Cathy Yi ever again. Please be ware and avoid her at all costs, especially if you are a patient in a bigger body. All bodies deserve respect from healthcare providers.

This woman has her medical degree and wants you to know it. The lack of bedside manners, trauma informed care, and language used that a patient could understand was extremely disappointing. The power dynamic in this type of setting is fragile and was misused in my case. This woman inserted her personal opinion to inform me that I wouldn’t be able to properly care for a child one day because of my anxiety about health related issues. I did not ask for mental health advice and even if I had, her advice only made mental health issues worse. She pushed lidocaine as a solution after I stated I didn’t want it and the first time used this inside of me without asking me first. She blamed most of my issues on my anxiety and stated that I needed to move on from my past traumas or I wouldn’t be able to properly heal. I felt shamed the entire time and had already told her I was in therapy along with telling her about past trauma. She didn't tell me when she was doing anything during the exam… and I felt entirely dismissed the whole time. And that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Dr. Yi accurately diagnosed and is currently treating me for pelvic pain, which I had misinterpreted as part of my back pain. Since receiving her treatments, I am finally able to sleep through the night without pain. I want more people to realize that there is hope and treatment for pelvic pain.

Had never met this doctor until I was in labor, she forced me to have an unwanted epidural during labor. She made my daughters birth one of the worst experiences of my life. I wasn't fully numbed for my c section and when I was panicing because I was in pain she continued to blow it off and then tell me to shut my mouth. I ended up getting so many meds I stopped breathing during the procedure and was so drugged up I don't remember much of anything of my daughters birth.

In the first minutes of our first meeting Dr. Yi told me to expect a c-section because of my weight. While she correctly assumed that I would have gestational diabetes in the last trimester, she also said my child would be very large necessitating a c-section. I was able to keep the sugar levels low without insulin, using only diet and exercise. My child was born c-section because he was breech, not because of her "doom and gloom" early prognosis. Other highlights of our visits:"Please just burn those "What to Expect" books; you can't plan a labor.""There's really no reason to have the blood test done(for Downs Syndrome) unless you are going to do something about it."
