Dr. Cindy Hong Ta Pau, MD

Great Doctor. Very smart, nice and personable. But she is very busy. It’s hard to get an appointment and wait time is long. I cancelled once and had to wait 2 months for a next available appointment.

Dr. Pau is a great doctor but every time I come in I have to wait ATLEAST 40 min after the scheduled appointment. The staff asks us as patients to come in early and even though I come in atleast 15 min early I’m always seen way later then my appointment time. It is just too long.

The best thing that ever happened to me was having my endocrinologist change over to concierge service. That's how I found Dr Cindy Pau. Dr. Pau was able to teach me how to regulate my insulin and she also has a lot of different drugs and options to offer me depending on my lifestyle. She always encourages me to watch my diet and gives me a lot of information on making good food choices and what foods are okay to eat when dining at local places like Zippy's or fast food restaurants. The thing about Dr. Pau is that she told me upfront that if I could not reach my goals or show improvement in six months then she would have to refer me to another doctor. She really cares about her patients and won't rush you out. She's very thorough with all of her patients. I can't say enough about her. Even my PCP said she's one of the best. He said, "lucky you she's a smart one."

We are so blessed to have someone with Dr. Pau’s caliber of expertise in our community here in Hawaii. Prior to seeing her, I was flying to the mainland to have my pituitary tumor check ups. It was a lot of time and a lot of money. But of course, it’s my health so it’s worth it. Then I was informed about Dr. Pau and that she trained at Harvard Medical School and was a faculty member there before coming back to Hawaii. She even trained with some of the top doctors in my type of pituitary tumor so I decided to give her a try. It’s only been a few visits but so far it’s been great! I have a lot of confidence in her and the quality of care is like I am being seen at a center of excellence on the mainland. I would say that wait at the office is quite long though. I typically wait at least half an hour to be seen and it’s a little claustrophobic for me to wait in the rooms. But for me, I saves an entire trip to the mainland which would consume many days of time and a lot of money, so I’ll… wait all day if I need to for her level expertise.

Dr Pau is my third Endocrinologist and possibly the most informed. Some of her decisions are based on lab results and will have them redone if the outcome is questionable. She is very thorough and will find a way to find a solution to problems with the least complications to assure a good quality of life for the patient. Options are clearly expressed and the patient is asked to make his/her choice. I like her directness yet compassionate way she explains things. I feel a lot of satisfaction when I leave her office.

Dr. Pau is not your typical pill-pushing doctor. She really cares and pushed me to make better diet and exercise choices in my life so that I would not be dependent on medications. I've never had a doctor spend so much time with me explaining things and coaching me on actually how to accomplish what she recommends. Duh! I've been told by many doctors that I need to lose weight, but Dr. Pau actually took the time to provide specifics about how to actually do it. She does run behind schedule though (apparently, per her staff, she doesn't get to decide her scheduling, WTH?), but when I'm in the room, I completely understand why because of the amount of detail and personalization in the care that she provides. Awesome doctor!

Absolutely brilliant is what comes to mind when considering Dr. Cindy Pau. Exceedingly knowledgeable, very comprehensive and thorough, diagnosis based on clinical evidence, compassionate, considerate, and truthful. If you want someone who will only tell you what you want to hear, and not the truth in a kind and compassionate manner, then Dr. Pau is not for you. If you want accurate diagnosis based on clinical evidence, and a carefully thought out treatment plan with your best interest in mind, and with your input, then she will be a great match for you. When I saw her, she did not speculate, but went over all my history, lab results, etc., completely discussed what I was doing, my concerns, what other physicians were doing for me, and then provided a plan to fill in the gaps by requesting additional information from the pharmacy, previous docs, and additional lab work. Heard some crackling in one lung, and suggest how to deal with that, did foot nerve sensitivity testing and general… foot health exam, and listened carefully to the heart as well. Sat with me for about 2 hours going over everything, explaining things I needed to know and what I'd asked about, and then the "plan of treatment". I've seen a lot of docs in my life, some very good, and some related to ducks. She is perhaps the most intellectually impressive doc I've ever seen (and that's saying a lot). She is also quite personable (read good bedside manner), friendly, and very easy to talk to. She listens very well. Great doc.
