Dr Clayton Dai Kwock Chong

Cancer is a scary word for a patient. The worst case scenario always comes to mind before your first visit. Clayton is a matter of fact doctor, which is exactly the type of patient I am. Tell me what I have, lets make a plan and go from there. All I can say is I have a grateful heart for my outcome so far. The key to survival is surveillance.

I went to see Dr. Chong after I was diagnosed with state IV cancer in 2012. He was very professional when he needed to be, but also didn't mind using humor to lighten the mood. Having cancer can be very disheartening at times so it was important for me to have a doctor that would be there to help me with every step of the way - pushing me when I needed a push and laughing with me when I needed the laugh. His staff was also absolutely incredible and they made me feel like family at every appointment. The best part is that he cured my cancer and I am officially a cancer survivor! I am, and will, continue to send him any referrals I can. Truly one of the great doctors of Hawaii.

Being diagnosed with cancer is one of the most frightening experiences one can have. Dr. Chong was always supportive and positive. He was extremely honest about the difficulties I would be facing but knowing what to expect made it easier to cope. I have made it through two years with his help.

My mother has pancreatic cancer and I go with her to all of her doctor appointments and he barely gives us information. My mom is now in hospice care after a harsh year of chemotherapy. Recently my mom has been complaining of bloating in her stomach and can barely eat. The nurse suggested she get relief from the doctor, but he wants nothing to do with her now.

My father was diagnosed with clear cell renal carcinoma early in 2011, and we were then referred to Clayton Chong for treatment. He coldly informed us that the condition was terminal, but that he was the best on the island, and began his series of experimental treatments. This last year with Clayton Chong has been filled with no returned phone calls, office appointment waits that are often longer than two hours with meetings that often last less than 2 minutes, and again with absolutely zero compassion for my father. I have often wondered if guinea pigs received better treatment than we did. Most recently, my father spent over two hours waiting in Chong's office for his monthly checkup, and Chong whisked in, said basically nothing, and abruptly left. When my father was paying his co-pay at the front desk before he left, he complained to the front nurse that making customers wait for 2 1/2 hours for a 30 second appointment was a terrible way of doing business, and that if he… treated his clients that way, he would have been out of business years ago. Clayton overheard what my father said, came out and yelled at him that he didn't need him as a patient, and that he should go find a different doctor. This coming from the man who was in trusted with the care of a terminally ill man. And it didn't stop there. My father was so shocked and hurt, that he then left the office in a daze. He tried to go back to Clayton the next week to apologize and see if they could work it out, but Clayton absolutely refused. For the last month, my father has been without care, and all the cancer doctors he talks to at Queen's refuse to see him, because Clayton said not to. We are still looking for a physician who can help my father, but would want everyone to know of our experience with Clayton Chong. Do yourselves and your family a favor, and look for someone other than this guy.
