Dr. Dabo Xu, MD

Dr. Xu listened, asked many good questions, and took notes. My entire experience was so much better than the one I had been using. There was a real effort to diagnose my GI issue.

Dr. Xu was amazing. I have been struggling with stomach pain for months and have visited multiple GI doctors. But no luck until I visited Dr. Xu. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and know my rare condition. I highly recommend Dr. Xu to anyone who is suffering from stomach pain, diarrhea, and other GI-related diseases.

Dr. Xu is very kind and professional. He made me feel comfortable and reassured about my procedure. Would highly recommend to a family member needing any type of GI procedure.

In summary. The worst doctor appointment experience of my life. Complete waste of time. Waited 6 months to be seen by this doctor. There are only 2 GI specialists with INOVA in northern VA accepted by my Insurance. The other doctor is located in the same building as Dr. Dabo Xu who claims to be in charge of the other specialist. Dr. Dabo Xu treated me as if I was the disease. He completely ignored/disregarded my PTSD from my diagnostic colonoscopy which I was required to be awake for due to severe life threatening flare 100% of my colon was ulcerated. That was done by Kaiser P. years ago. The trauma that procedure caused me I will not put myself through again  unless 100% medically necessary. I already have my diagnosis with pathology which is a chronic disease. Which I provided the imaging and report to Dr. Dabo Xu. I explained my reason for the appointment was to establish a new GI doctor with management treatment plan. I asked to learn my treatment options which there are many… available. 1.5 years ago I stopped my Infliximab infusions due to insurance change, and no longer wanting that compromised/suppressed immune system it causes. The infusions were a depressing every 8 week experience that made me sick for 3 days afterwards, caused weight gain and other health issues. He couldn't have possibly cared less. He discussed several blood panels. He said  "Infleximab infusions were the ONLY treatment option he would order for me." As he was finishing up the appointment he ordered another colonoscopy at the last second. leaving no time for discussion or explanation as to why. I later learn he requires ALL of his patients to have a colonoscopy performed by HIM, BEFORE he begins ANY treatment.  Regardless if you have your pathology report and colonoscopy imaging disc. There is zero medical necessity to put pre diagnosed patients with chronic diseased colon to re learn what we already know and provided medical record proof of including the infusions.  He reiterated only offering infliximab infusions regardless if I agreed to having a colonoscopy done by him. I am the patient. I have the right to know my treatment options and have the ultimate say what medications and procedures are done to my body. I already expressed why I won't get back on the infusions. He refused to discuss ANY of the many other UC treatment options. He then black listed me from the Alexandra INOVA GI office he works at.  His words. " I will only treat you if you end up at one the emergency departments or hospitals he works at with your UC/GI issues." I asked if I could be seen by the other doctor at his office. His reply "NO, because he is the boss of their department and thus they must agree with one another." He proceeds to recommend I go to VCU GI department. The nearest other place that accepts my insurance. Which is obviously ridiculously too far away for a patient with active UC. Not having other options I started the process to become a patient at VCU GI. They have an even longer wait list for appointments. 1 year later I'm still waiting. Meanwhile Dr. Dabo Xu failed to tell me the critical reason why VCU hadn't gotten back to me despite my many calls with them. Over 6 months later Dr. Xu says "It's illegal for one specialist to refer their patient to another specialist." If this is true they knew this from the beginning and should have informed me. Forcing me to start the process from scratch back with my PCP. Exponentially further delaying any treatment for my disease. My UC has gotten worse having gone untreated. This is 100% Dr. Dabo Xu's fault. He has failed on all levels of being my doctor. He has not followed up with VCU nor any other GI doctor to make sure there is a transfer of care which is a critical part of any doctors duty. Him forcing my health to further degrade. Refusing to treat me unless I'm hospitalized. This is absolutely unacceptable, that any human let alone a licensed doctor would intentionally do the aforementioned to his patient.  I would not recommend this doctor to anyone. I highly suggest his methods are investigated.
