I got lucky. I needed a psychiatrist to help with my 35 year depression which had gotten miserably worse. She alleviated my desperation and hopelessness almost immediately: I knew she was really listening and that my feelings were actually regarded. The general atmosphere of NYC phsychiatry is sterile, rather authoritarian, lacking compassion & sending the patient into the pharmaceutical morass pretty much alone. Ironically, the patients' feelings seem to be ignored in pursuit of diagnosing & medicating.BUT: Dr. DeVito is WHAT A PSYCHIATRIST SHOULD BE! She should be the paradigm for her profession's comportment. She was warm, truly interested and caring, unhurried, "present" & engaged, asked questions and actually let me answer them, and communicated to me in her manner and professional capacity that she takes me personally -- not as a copay, diagnosis or script to be written. She should be on the TOP of everybody's list if they are searching for a psychiatrist who will make them… feel supported, cared for, understood and safe; her instructions helped me achieve within a day what I haven't had in 35 years: results without being medicated out of reality; and the promise of being able to live my life again. She is literally wonderful!Do not think twice about it -- look no further. If you need a psychiatrist she is one of the best in this huge, anonymous city!
