After he finished bragging about his credentials, he went into detail about how my sleeping position is causing the pain in my mouth. He filed away at my teeth, gave me a shot, and told me to come back in two weeks to pay another 185 to see what he can do. Needless to say, the pain came back with a vengeance. Never again.

I too, went to this dentist for TMJ, mine is purely a muscular disorder. He also ground down my teeth ONCE. I had read the comment from the previous patient who probably does not have any teeth left. He did more than 1 ml because I cannot clench my teeth for exam for the doctor who is treating me for muscles spasms. My dentist is fit to be tied!!! Stay away!!!

Any knowledgeable TMJ specialist up-to-date in current treatment protocols will tell you that equilibration is a non-reversible, permanent change and should not be done as part of conservative, first-line treatment. Only AFTER the jaw is stabilized in its correct position should this even be considered, and only after very careful assessment. I saw Dr Crout 5 times and every time, including the initial consultation, he filed my teeth down. Not only was it unnecessary, but it made my condition much worse and I have since spent countless hours and dollars trying to undo the damage that was done. What's worse, he was insistent that it needed to be done or I would never get better, and did not listen to my concerns. Lesson: follow your own instincts and have the courage to get up and walk out if something doesn't align with what you know to be right for you. This is especially difficult to do when you are suffering from the debilitating effects of TMJ disorder and are desperate to get… help. I can't get my teeth back the way they were but hopefully my story will prevent this from happening to someone else. Dr Crout filed down my cavity free teeth, not only changing the way they fit together, but taking away much needed vertical dimension. My teeth now need to be built up in an unnatural way in order to recover the vertical dimension that was filed away. If you have a mild, straight-forward case of TMJD, Dr Crout may very well be able to help you, but raise a red flag if anyone you seek care from wants to file your teeth in the initial stages of treatment, or who tells you that 95% of the people he has treated got better in just 5 sessions. This runs contrary to the complexity of TMJD and you would be wise to seek out someone else for care.
