Darrell Elkin, APRN

Poor knowledge of diabetes. He took a type 1 (insulin dependant) diabetic off of sliding scale regular insulin that an endocrinologist had prescribed to the patient for 10 years. Dr. Elkin's rationale was that he changed the long acting insulin from once a day to half the dose twice a day and that by doing that the patient would not need to take regular insulin with meals. Anyone who knows anything about diabetes knows that type 1 diabetics have to have regular insulin with meals. The patient was an inmate in a county jail at the time and the doctor took the patient off the insulin because the jail administration did not want to pay for the insulin.

Made extremely innapropriate joke to female patient. Poor knowledge of diabetes treatments. No followup and hard to get to respond.
