Dr. Darryl Brian Kabins, MD

He spoke down to me and mad me feel very invalidated.

My adolescent daughter was seeing Dr. Kabins and getting a prescription from him. She was doing well on it, but when she told me she wanted to up the dose, I grew concerned she was more interested in the side effect of weight loss. I talked with her about it, got some evasion, so I called his office, left a message stating my concern, asking him to call me before he upped the dose. He never did, and at her next visit (I wasn't present), he upped the dose anyway and told her not to lose more weight (so he clearly understands the adolescent girl's mind lol, not really lol). She lost more weight. I called his office again truly concerned, asking for a prescription for the lower dose, and for him to please call me. He never called. No one from his office called. We still had some of the lower dose around, and with the intervention of us, friends, and her therapist, she started to gain weight and was doing well on the lower prescription. When my husband went to refill it, we learned that… Dr Kabins was refusing to fill even the lower dose because *now* he was suddenly concerned about the weight loss, which wasn't even happening anymore. (In fact she was finally gaining.) It seems far more likely he's just concerned about liability, and was not concerned that now, with the new substitution drug he prescribed, she's throwing up, irritable, not sleeping, not herself. I called again to explain all his and that she was just fine on the lower dose and that she had parents and a therapist talking to her about her weight, and monitoring it, and that she had gained several pounds. I insisted that someone call me back. Once again, he only relayed through his nurse that he would not refill the prescription for that med at all because she abused it. It really seems like 1. at some point, he could have had a two-minute phone call with a concerned parent and 2. he might have listened to me before he upped the dose and 3. his office could have warned us that they were cutting the med of completely so we didn't have to learn (several weeks after he did it!) from the pharmacy. So if you want your adolescent going to someone who will never call you back (I've literally never heard the guy's voice) or pay any attention to the nuance of doses or do anything, really, but make $ and cover his own butt while playing with your kid's mental health, this is the doctor for you. Once I called his office and got a woman to absolutely promise to call me back with information within 48 hours. No one ever called. That's the kind of place they're running. Just now, I called the nurse who answers the phone and asked who I could complain to. She said she'd put me in touch with a the clinic manager. After a ten minute wait, I got the voicemail of the nurse I'd just been talking with. If that sounds competent to you, have at it.
