Dr. Daryl Edward Malena, DDS

Dr. Malena is a periodontist in Omaha, Nebraska who
has thirty-three years of experience in his field.  He is currently
on the
faculty of two dental colleges, has taught in two others and has
served as an anthropology professor. In addition to his practice, he is
an active researcher, working to add knowledge to his field in the areas
of genetics, immunohistochemistry and surgery. 
His current academic and
professional affiliations are at University
of Nebraska Medical Center, its Dental
College in Lincoln,  Creighton
University, the Cranial
Facial Malformation Team at Children's
Memorial Hospital and Nebraska
Methodist Hospital. He is a member of the American
Dental Association, the American
Academy of Periodontology and the American
Association of Physical Anthropologists. 
His research interests
occupy most of his spare time, however he paints labyrinths,
builds computers, does church work, and has been the faciliter of the local chapter of The
Compassionate Friends, a support …group for families that have
experienced the death of a child. His wife, Audrey
shares part of the office space where she is a marriage and family
therapist.  Their daughter is a graduate student at UCSD and is
frequently away doing research in archeology and ancient history.
"I like private practice because it keeps me in
touch with the real reason for the research.  I get to see and help
real patients and daily make the connection between the test tube and
the  microscope and our need to keep our teeth.  I also enjoy
it because real patients are so different than the textbook world. 
Patients often have limited resources and we have to come up with
treatment plans that take into account insurance coverage (or lack
thereof), a wedding coming up next month, or maybe a complicating
medical condition."
