Dr. David William Brody, MD

Dr. Brody is an absolutely awful human being and a terrible psychiatrist. PLEASE STAY AWAY OR YOUR LIFE WILL BE DESTROYED. After giving me a course of ELECTRO SHOCK THERAPY, he claimed the effects of it, which were severe retrograde and anterograde amnesia, zero effect on my supposedly treatment resistant depression, (diagnosed after less than TWO MONTHS of trying medications that take several months to determine whether they even work!), severe anhedonia post ECT…he continued insisting to keep frying my brain some more with more ECTs, which I refused. When I complained about the devastating effects, he claimed they could not possibly be from ECT, but I must have had a prior neurological disorder! I am a twice Ivy League graduate who lost her career thanks to this and another equally ethical psychiatrist who insisted on ECT after a mere two months of medication trials. My current psychiatrist called him arrogant, defensive and unhelpful, just to share that it wasn’t just me who felt… dismissed by this incompetent money-hungry “doctor” after destroying my intellect, which was the source of my life, career and world. I don’t know if this is the same David Brody who was indicted in California for pretty much giving out stimulant meds without regard for the patients’ wellbeing and being accused of being a pill-mill rather than a doctor, but I suspect he fled CA and started his NY operation thereafter. I would stay as far away as possible. He was “kind” enough to me while I was paying 7k per “shock” (which takes maybe 5-10 minutes of his time and destroys your brain). Once I realized the devastation of this “treatment” and asked for an explanation and follow-up, he simply responded “You are not even my patient.” He is a dangerous, dangerous man.

First thing to know about Dr. Brody is that he schedules extremely short visits in order to maximize his revenue. I saw Dr. Brody for a year and my visits were limited to a mere 5 minutes. Appallingly, he would never take the time to review my chart so he would rarely remember what we had discussed last time, and I had to remind him. He failed to monitor my heart rate and blood pressure despite the fact that I was starting a new stimulant medication. I was going through a divorce at the time and once burst into tears during my appointment because of this. Dr. Brody showed zero compassion and simply pushed me out the door! He never followed up to check how I was doing. At that point, I got fed up and went elsewhere. Since then, I learned that most psychiatrists spend at least 15 minutes, and they always review your file first and address important details like your vitals and if you are experiencing emotional trauma. You deserve better care. Take your money elsewhere.

Dr Brody insisted he needed to speak to my FATHER before prescribing me medication, despite me being in my mid-twenties. I am a high-functioning adult, and do not have an appointed guardian. This isn't Saudi Arabia. He was sexist and condescending. I went after speaking to my therapist about going on medication, and I was not requesting any commonly abused psychiatric meds. I do not recommend to young women.

I read through all of the reviews on here prior to seeing Dr. Brody and was surprised, seeing as my Psychotherapist recommended him. I am personally glad I didn't listen because my experience was overwhelmingly positive and helpful. Yes, Dr. Brody is on his laptop, because he's taking notes so he can keep track of symptoms and history. He was thoughtful and careful with his diagnosis of me, collaborative with my psychotherapist, and took into consideration other health issues I have when weighing the pros and cons of medication. Psychiatrists are medical doctors, they will weigh in any and all factors even if you don't want them to. Overall, he didn't feel the need to prescribe me medication, which is incredibly noble and moral and hard to find within Psychiatrists today. Obviously a mental health professional is a personal choice, one that you should feel comfortable with, but I didn't see anything wrong with his methods or approach from a general perspective. I'm grateful to… have been referred to him.

After explaining to him that I had struggled with depression for 5 years and had the occasional suicidal thoughts, he told me that this was just a "rough patch" in my liie and that I was probably not even depressed. A waste of time.

I've had a similar experience with Dr. Brody as several other commenters had mentioned. He was on his laptop, made little eye contact and interrupted me as I spoke. It showed little compassion/care for his patient, but I overlooked that, as I was strictly looking for a diagnosis. HOWEVER, once I talked to my psychologist about this appointment, he said Dr. Brody told him about concerns with “marijuana and cocaine problem" and had little to say about my personality disorder. See, this is an issue for me, because I had not smoked weed in months and used cocaine very occasionally and recreationally. My psychologist agreed that his assessment was wrong. The fact that he clearly did not listen and felt comfortable enough to make a diagnosis is concerning.

Never pushes too fast

I would not recommend Dr. Brody. I went to see Dr. Brody because he takes my health insurance and I liked the location of his office. He typed away on his laptop while I spoke and made little eye contact. He was biting his nails at some point. His responses were condescending at times. When asking for clarification, he said several times, "I already KNOW that" but he actually misunderstood me which is why I had to repeat myself to him. I don't trust his diagnostic ability, as he disagreed with the diagnosis I had been given by five other psychiatrists. I would not feel comfortable taking any medication prescribed by him, because I know it might be dangerous for me to take some of the medication he suggested if the other psychiatrists are correct about my diagnosis, and I strongly believe that they are.

Found him to be basically adequate. I did always have the sense of being rushed during appointments and he does come across as distanced and removed, but he took my insurance and that was key. I really did not like that it at times took weeks to respond to a voicemail or email contact, but I couldn't afford to go out of network.

Referred by another psychiatrist to Dr, Brody for investigation and treatment of possible psychological effects of traumatic brain injury. After making an appointment to see him in 1 1/2 months, spent days looking into insurance policies that covered him and the psychologists he works with, further diagnostic tests I might need, and top doctors in other areas Also spent at least 6 grueling hours filling out a detailed pre-visit questionnaire before our scheduled appointment. Was enthusiastically, and with high hopes, looking forward to finally having the problem solved once and for all. A day later I received a very short one sentence email from him saying he had decided not to see me. After catching my breath I called to find out why and was told he had no experience with traumatic brain injury. I suppose the doctor who referred me to him was a complete incompetent idiot. But the cold, unfeeling "No" Brody sent me without explanation makes me realize how truly clueless he… is when it comes to peoples' emotions.
