As a critical care nurse, I have the privilege of working alongside many surgeons, but Dr. David Canvasser stands out as truly exceptional—not only for his technical skill as a thoracic surgeon, but for the way he shows up as a human being. From a nurse’s point of view, Dr. Canvasser embodies the kind of physician you hope every patient gets. He is calm, thoughtful, and deeply respectful of the entire care team. He listens—really listens—to nurses at the bedside and values our assessments and concerns. That level of collaboration creates an environment where patient safety and outcomes genuinely thrive. What is most striking about Dr. Canvasser is his compassion. He takes the time to explain complex situations to patients and families with clarity and empathy, even during some of the most frightening moments of their lives. You can see the trust patients place in him, and it’s well deserved. He never rushes, never dismisses concerns, and never forgets that there is a person—not just a… diagnosis—on the other side of the bed. Clinically, his surgical expertise is evident in the outcomes we see and in the confidence he brings to high-acuity situations. As a nurse, it is incredibly reassuring to care for post-operative patients knowing they are under Dr. Canvasser’s care. His attention to detail, follow-through, and accessibility make a tangible difference in recovery and morale—for patients and staff alike. Healthcare can be demanding and emotionally heavy, but working with physicians like Dr. Canvasser reminds me why I chose this profession. After having a heart valve replacement surgery in Feb 2016, the doctor and surgical staff entered my room and said that "a mistake may have been made". Not want you want to hear laying on your back with tubes sticking out of you. I was then sent to Stanford to have Dr. Woo repair the errant surgery and am currently playing Pickleball, table tennis, delivering meals on wheels,etc. Moral, go to Stanford if possible.

Dr Canvasser has performed open heart surgery on me and my wife, and as far as I'm concerned he is the best surgeon this side of the Mississippi, bar none..
