Summary

Alan Chandler, MD is an ophthalmologist certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology to provide medical and surgical eye care. He is a 1984 graduate of the University of Virginia with a B.A. in biology. Dr. Chandler attended medical school at the Medical College of Virginia / Virginia Commonwealth University graduating with an M.D. in 1988. After completing an internship in Internal Medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1989 he completed a medical and surgical residency in ophthalmology at Washington Hospital Center / Georgetown University in Washington D.C. in 1992. He has been continuously board certified in ophthalmology since 1994.Dr. Chandler has been practicing ophthalmology in the Richmond area since 1992, primarily located in Mechanicsville, north Richmond, and eastern Henrico County. He has been exclusively located in Mechanicsville since 2004. He is an active staff member at Memorial Regional Medical Center and performs surgery at the Memorial Regional Medical Center Ambulatory Surgery Unit. Dr. Chandler is primarily a general ophthalmologist and performs comprehensive eye examinations for glasses and contact lenses. However, he specializes in cataract surgery with lens implant, the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, and the treatment of surface ocular conditions such as dry eye and blepharitis. Dr. Chandler emphasizes preventive eye care, especially for preventable conditions such as age-related macular degeneration. There are many exciting, new diagnostic and surgical technologies that Dr. Chandler uses. This includes the use of advanced technology lens implants at the time of cataract surgery that can provide not only greatly improved distance vision but also excellent intermediate and near vision with minimal need for glasses. This can greatly enhance the quality of life of patients after surgery, minimizing their dependence on glasses for everyday visual needs. For patients with glaucoma, there are in-office surgical options such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), which is a low-risk, repeatable laser procedure that can reduce the need for eye drop medication and improve eye pressure control. There is also a recently approved medication implant that can be implanted in the office for up to 6 months of eye pressure control with reduced need for eye drops. Dr. Chandler employs highly trained staff and has state of the art diagnostic equipment to manage ongoing conditions such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.Dr. Chandler also performs laser treatment of floaters with an in-office laser, especially for patients that have persistent floaters and have also had cataract surgery. While this procedure has been inconsistently available regionally for many years, the laser used by Dr. Chandler is specifically designed for the treatment of floaters and is definitely a step forward in the treatment of this bothersome condition.Dr. Chandler is a native of Virginia, being born in Roanoke, Virginia and graduating from high school in Chesterfield County. The only time that he has not lived in Virginia was during ophthalmology residency, after which he relocated to Hanover County in 1992. Dr. Chandler has been involved in charity eye care over the years, including providing free eye exams in Aylett, Virginia for several years, and being involved in the Access Now program.
