Dr. David L Charney, MD

Dr. David Charney has gone above and beyond in my experience. He has been an absolute professional and shown genuine interest in what I've had to say. He even spent extra time with me when I was his last appointment of the day (which, obviously, he did not have to do). I appreciate his time, attention, and advice.

Have PTSD from military service. Saw him 2 years ago, his recommendations made me worse so had to switch.

I have really had a great overall experience with Dr. Charney. I appreciate the emphasis he places on the client paying attention to their own body and making decisions bases on that information as opposed to doctors who just dictate what you should do.

Dunno why I was referred to him, my suspicion is that was the only way out for the previous person. As time went on Dr. Charney became more and more... disinterested in me. He basically appeared bored and unprepared and just wanted to make another appointment after 15 minutes. Also, be sure to check your insurance as there was an "accidental" issue of being billed for "erroneous" appointments.

Dr. Charney is great. He is easy to talk to and truly listens to you. All in all, he is a wonderful psychiatrist. I would recommemd him highly.

Quick overview: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!Charney is misleading, unprofessional and uncaring; doesn't listen, ask good questions or give good advice; and worst doesn't even remember details about patient's MEDICATION. He doesn't deserve to charge $250/hr! Details as follows:I heard that Charney had pretty good reviews and was relieved when he seemed to live up to them. For the first few sessions (3-4), he paid attention to all the information "dump", took notes, asked pertinent questions to better understand my background and how it affected the history of my relationship, and started giving some (not too much) meaningful advice.I started to open up to him, felt more comfortable (which was not easy given my past experience with bad therapists who a) just nodded and parroted what I said without giving actual advice and b) was completely disinterested looking out the window, checking his watch and answering his phone in the middle of a session). The next few sessions, however, I… noticed he stopped taking notes- he didn't even bother taking out his index card and pen. He never started off sessions with, "So last time we left off with [insert topic]. We ran out of time but it seemed like we still had a lot to talk about- would you care to pick up where we left off?" He never tried to tie several themes together for a bigger analysis. Instead he started every single session with a general, "So... how are things?" Then he would proceed to nod and make sympathetic noises/comments but didn't give any substantial advice or ask any real questions. Several times he asked me to describe a situation that I was sure I already had related in a previous session in detail. I began to think he wasn't really listening. I tried to give him the benefit of doubt-everyone forgets once in awhile right?- but once the pattern repeated over several sessions I couldn't ignore it. The last straw happened when Charney not only forgot a big situation that happened but also forgot the important details about my MEDICATION!!!!Charney started treating me for depression (I cried too easily and too much) and for the first few weeks it seemed to work. I had told him about my heart condition but he reassured me that the brand "most likely" wouldn't have any negative affects. So it was odd when I started experiencing chest pains. Over the course of the next few weeks I voiced my concern to him, he brushed it off, I stopped taking them (and curiously enough the chest pains stopped), and saw my cardiologist who recommended another brand. I gave Charney her written suggestion and he said he needed time to consider it. Then I didn't get to see him until almost month later (he was booked for two weeks, I cancelled once). By that time I was really struggling with my relationship and was very emotional (crying) in the session. Charney commented about upping my current dosage of the medication. When I reminded him that I had stopped taking it awhile ago, he exclaimed "Ohhh??!" I reminded him about my cardiologist writing a recommendation. He tried to recover by saying "Oh yes.. I remember now.. I'm remembering.. Remind me what she said?" He completely forgot. Ultimately, SO DISAPPOINTED! I felt like he purposely lead us on- pretended to care, did everything right for the first few sessions- but once we finally started trusting him he grew complacent and put forth a minimum amount of effort. He must of thought I would be content in just venting for endless amounts of sessions-easy money for him but I gain nothing in return! When I finally confronted him about this, he didn't even apologize- just barely acknowledged it!! I was so upset I left the session. He didn't even care to follow up with a phone call.

My former psychiatrist retired; I had spent eight years under his care. I starting seeing Dr. Charney and was immediately impressed. Dr. Charney goes above and beyond to meet my needs. He is caring, intelligent, and tremendously helpful. He made--what I thought would be a difficult transition--seamless.

Saw him for depression after a divorce. I had undergone lots and lots of Psych evals for work related stuff. I had done lots of seplf discovery about myself, my failed marriage, why I picked my spouse, my parents relationships. I was trying to get over the anger and bitterness because I knew it was holding me back. First session was a data dump me telling him the entire deal. Second session it was like he did not remember the first one. I was looking forward to getting into the meat and see what some concrete things were that I could start analysing and working on. It ended up about him telling me his story of remarriage and the fact that many divorced couples who go through therapy end up back together. Really Doc? Cause I am here to move on. $500 later, I probably would have gotten more bang for my buck with a couple massages and hiring a personal trainer to get my body in shape and endorphins up. He may be able to help you, but I was looking for direct discussion and and action… plan. He wanted more sessions. How different is the human condition? He had to have seen my case before. Offer some advice. If it just takes time to heal, then I don't need a Doc right?

He is very understanding and explains exactly what is going on and causing your problem.

A day does not go by that I think about the harrowing "interrogations" that I endured from him. I felt like I was captured spy or he was hoping for some insane patient to write a book about. Or, maybe he was compensating for some home life drama. Any ways, I have to see another doctor and endure therapy just go get over "Dr. Charney" and his methodology. I would strongly caution against anyone seeing him.
