Dr. David Byron Coward, MD

Dr. Coward has been my orthopedic surgeon since 1991 and has done three of my knee surgeries during that time. He has always taken his time with me and thoroughly answered all of my questions. He even came back early from Tahoe to see me on a weekend, because my knee needed aspiration. Sometimes they can run behind there, but I always plan on that for any doctor appointment. Especially when it is a doctor I know takes time to answer patients questions, as this is so important. I would rather wait longer and be able to spend the time I need with the doctor, than be seen right on time. He has also taken time to contact me after appointments to make certain I am OK.

I am an active 26 year old who has had a medial meniscectomy about a year ago on my right knee with a great family friend dr operating in Berkeley. I was injured at work in my left knee recently and had the same operation done with Dr Coward. My first procedure ended with two small incisions about 1/2 inch on either side of my knee, no scar tissue and great recovery with little to no marks left after less than a year, i was referred to dr coward because it was a workmans comp issue, i wih i had declined him and asked for another option. Upon unbandaging myself after this most recent operation I noticed that Dr Coward left a total of 5 holes in my knee. This brought immediate concern and I asked him about it on my follow up appointment and what the reason for it was, he said it was, "how I like to do it.".... True to the other reviews he is very arrogant and no help in answering serious questions. He operates on our bodies like its a stuffed animal and no biggie that there are 3 more… and much larger cuts in my leg that came with much more swelling post-op than they should have. I also have a large amount of scar tissue right on the bottom of my knee cap ranging from the inner to outer side which happens to be the center point of pressure when someone is kneeling... It's been a few months now and I'm not sure ill be able to ever kneel comfortably again. Have little faith that he will ease my concerns upon a final check up appt in a week or so and am thinking I will need to look for outside help.

I was referred to him by my workmans comp lawyer. He is said to be the best ortho in Sacramento. He's an absolute jerk who does not care about whether or not you get your concerns across.he might be different for people with insurance, but for people with workmans comp I would never recommend him

I was seen promptly. The staff was great, worked me in to accommodate my work schedule. He provided all kinds of options for me and I was able to make an educated choice. Knowledgeable and helpful.

This doctor was recommended to me however, when I attempted see him, he declined me as a patient. No reason, just "no".

They advertise themselves as "orthopedic medicine and surgery" but it's not clear that 'medicine' should be in the description. Dr. Coward was rude, arrogant and hostile. I can't evaluate his surgical technique.

Dr. Coward is a nice man and his MRI machine is way less claustrophobic than normal MRI machines.

Dr. Coward diagnosed and treated a complex trauma to my R knee. His manner was gracious and caring and his skills a surgeon is impressive. Ten years later my knee is highly functional. I hold Dr. Coward in the highest regard and would recommend him without reservation.
