Summary
My friends call me David. I have been with Kaiser Permanente in Southern California since 1993. The main reason I moved to California was for the opportunity to work with Kaiser Permanente. I feel I made the right choice for me and my family.
Biography
I was born in Philadelphia as the second oldest of six children (five boys and a girl). I grew up in South Philly until age 11, then we moved to South Jersey. I attended high school there and returned to Philadelphia for college. I became involved in the peace movement of the '60s and left school to follow that path. In the early '70s, I came to work in a psychiatric inpatient unit and met my first true mentor, who was a doctor there. He was impressed with my empathy for the patients of our unit, and he suggested that I become a doctor. I went back to college, majored in biologic sciences, took a master's degree from Temple University in biochemistry, and eventually went to medical school at Temple University. I graduated with …honors and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in 1979.
About my practice
Our practice addresses both chronic pain and chemical dependence. We use a modified version of the Alcoholics Anonymous twelve-step program as the basis of managing the nonpharmacological aspects of chronic pain. We address the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual (nonreligious) needs of our patients. Our team uses an open, directed approach to treatment planning.
How I thrive
My basic approach is to practice gratitude, patience, and tolerance on a daily basis. In body, I walk every day (my schedule does not allow for much more). In mind, I try to maintain an intellectual curiosity and honesty in my daily life.
