Dr. David Abraham Kaufman, MD

Gamal Ghoniem, MD, is currently the Head, section of Voiding Dysfunction, Female Urology and Reconstruction and Chairman of Medical Education at Cleveland Clinic Florida.

He was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1950, and he graduated from Alexandria Medical School in November, 1974. He completed his residency at the University of Alexandria, Alexandria, Egypt, in 1978 and, at that time, he was appointed as Assistant Lecturer. He left Egypt in 1980 for a fellowship in neurourology and female urology at Brown University in Rhode Island, and he also trained in urology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.

Dr. Ghoniem was appointed to Tulane University, Department of Urology as Assistant Professor in 1987 and Chief, Section of Urodynamics and Female Urology. In 1991, he was appointed Associate Professor of Urology with a joint appointment in the Department of Gynecology. The following year, he was promoted to Professor of Urology and Clinical Professor of Gynecology.

He is a member of several societies including the American Urological Association, Southern Medical Association, Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association, Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology, International Continence Society (ICS), International Urogynecology Association (IUGA) and the American Urogynecology Society.

Dr. Ghoniem was thesis supervisor to many fellows. He is the Chairman of Research and Development Committee (IUGA) and a member of the Education Committee (SUFU), and an elected member of the scientific committee of ICS.

He has edited two books: "Practical Guide to Female Pelvic Medicine" and "Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: a Multidisciplinary Approach." He wrote or co-wrote more than 120 publications including peer-reviewed papers, 10 videos, audio-tapes, review articles, editorials, and 23 book chapters. Also, he is editor of the special issue of Neurourology and Urodynamics for "Animal Models to Study Lower Urinary Tract", and Co-editor of a special issue of Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery for "Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: the Importance of a Multidisciplinary Approach." He is on the Editorial Board of Journal of International Urogynecology, Pelvic Floor Medicine Journal, and Journal of Neurourology and Urodynamics. He is a reviewer of many journals and has been appointed as an expert reviewer for Journal of Urology, Urology, Neurourology and Urodynamics and American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Ghoniem served as a consultant of the surgical treatment group of the 1st International Consultation on urinary incontinence, 1998, and he was a member of the same committee in the 2nd Consultation on Urinary Incontinence, 2001. He was appointed by NIH as a reviewer on the study sections of bladder physiology and urinary incontinence.

Currently, he is an elected member of the scientific committee of ICS and elected member of the SUFU executive committee. He finished a three-year term as Chairman of the Research and Development Committee of the IUGA.
