I initially began seeing Dr. Maslen simply because I needed a new primary care provider. At first, he seemed thoughtful and told me I was the “ideal patient” for the medication he prescribed, assuring me that he wasn’t concerned. That level of trust and communication made me feel safe. But over time, my experience left me feeling quietly dismissed. One early visit stands out: I was discussing personal and difficult issues around my mental health when I was asked, right as the appointment began, if a student could observe. I said yes in the moment, but it felt like there was no real room to decline. The conversation that followed was deeply personal, and having someone else in the room made it incredibly awkward. It may have been routine for them, but it didn’t feel trauma-informed or sensitive to what I was sharing. Months later, I reached out because the chest pain I had mentioned during earlier visits had worsened. What I now know is costochondritis seemed to have been developing… at the time. He was directly involved in treating this condition. Instead of continued support or a plan of care, I received a brief message saying they could no longer help due to a change in my insurance. There was no transition offered, no follow-up, no real acknowledgment. Insurance change = A swift shut of the door, no matter the consequences for me personally. I’m someone who shows up, does the work, and communicates honestly with my providers. I don’t expect perfection. But I do expect human decency and a clear path forward when I reach out for help. Being dropped in the middle of a painful medical situation, after months of trying to manage both physical symptoms and anxiety, was disheartening. I share this in case others are seeking care for anything beyond basic checkups. If your situation is more complex or personal, I’d suggest finding a provider with a clearer sense of continuity, boundaries, and follow-through.
