Dr. David Mark Nienhuis, MD

I went to see him for chronic throat clearing and what my then PCP called GERD. I also had enlarged lymph nodes on my neck I wanted to get checked out. This man is incredibly sexist and rude. The first thing he said to me when he walked into the room was, "Let's see if there is actually something going on here or if this is just anxiety." So so so disgusting, rude, sexist, patronizing, and condescending. Honestly, who raised you to treat another human being that way? How does one lack in social skills so much that you think it's okay to talk to someone that way? The entire time he was looking at my ears, nose, and throat, he kept saying, "Beautiful! Everything looks beautiful!" ... Would he have used the same adjective had I been male? DOUBT IT! It's 2019, but we still have a long way to go when it comes to treating both genders with respect. He referred me to a gastroenterologist after spending about ten minutes with me. Obviously terrible terrible TERRIBLE at his job if he walks into… the room with preconceived opinions about someone before they even open their mouth. I would give zero stars if I could, especially since ProHealth never followed up with my complaint I sent in the mail. I will be calling and following up. Guess my acid reflux I've had for six years is just ANXIETY. What an absolute joke. For anyone who doesn't know about doctors over-diagnosing women with anxiety, you should read DOING HARM: The Truth about how Bad Medicine and Lazy Science leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and SICK by Maya Dusenbery. The book is filled with statistics about how doctors like Nienhuis are harming us women because of their own sexist stereotypes.

Went to Dr. Nienhuis complaining about balance issues with plugged ear. He looked at my ears, nose and throat and said ear good color and everything perfect. After still suffering with balance to the point of not able to work or drive went to another ent dr. That dr.took one look at my ears and said my ear drum was retracted. He opened it up with a needle and then drained it. My ear opened and balance is much better. Suffered needlessly because Dr. Nienhuis didn't fix something that was very obvious.

After reading over some of the reviews I would have to say Dr Neinhuis has had a change of heart in the way he treats his patients. I have seen him in the past (early 2000's) with two of my children and he was wonderful. Last week I took my father to see him and I was very disappointed. He came in the room said next to nothing and started digging in my fathers ear. When my dad screamed in pain he looked at me and dug back in only to get a much louder scream. I had to do everything I could to get my dad calmed down. Bottom line is I will NEVER go back to see him he was so rude I should have just walked out when he walked in the room and said nothing before attending to dad.

Unlike many doctors I have visited, Dr Nienhuis was respectful, presented information in a clear manner, and discussed any decisions in a clear honest caring manner. From recommending tests (and explaining how they would help us plan the best course of treatment), to sharing the results of the tests (explaining what they meant) and presenting options for treatment, he actively engaged me in learning about my condition and my options for treatment. I did end up opting to have him perform surgery on my sinuses and frankly, I am breathing better than I had for decades. His post surgical follow up visits and check-ups were more of the same experience. He clearly knows his specialty and can deliver on the expectations he details for his patients when laying out your options. And through all this, he treats you like person - he is friendly, approachable, takes time to answer questions, is respectful of your feelings, and listens to your concerns. I just wish I could find other… physicians like him in other specialties .... he is that good.

Dr. Neinhuis was able to diagnose, treat and follow up with my nasal/sinus issue in a very open, honest and efficient manner. The surgery and ensuing recovery time for removal of nasal obstruction was amazing. I was back to normal in five days.
