Dr. David Eric Sawcer, MD

I have had significant sun exposure, am at risk for skin cancer. I also suffer from excess perspiration, adult acne, folliculitis, a scrotal rash condition, and a mystery lump in the skin of my scalp. On Aug. 12, Dr. S breezed through a quick exam and said I had no skin spots to be concerned about. His speech was clipped and his manner a bit condescending. I brought 6 of my ongoing dermatological RX’s with me to discuss. We got through 2 of these before the dr. exited. I realized after leaving that Dr. S had not examined my scalp area. During the exam I had made one RX request to have a topical prescribed by my previous Kaiser dermatologist MD filled. And in the quick face-to-face exam Dr. S had agreed to make an RX for this. I followed up by email (thro USC patient portal) on two issues: 1) could I have a brief re-do exam, due to the potential for sun spots in scalp and the mystery lump in scalp?, and 2) where was the RX he had agreed to write? I received NO RESPONSE to the… request about an add-on exam for scalp issues. I see this as a FUNDAMENTAL failing. I prompted the dr. twice by email following the original message, but still—nothing. The response I got regarding issue 2 indicated the dr. would not write the RX unless he had “some kind of record from Kaiser”. When I provided a Kaiser RX label showing diagnosis attached to a responding email, I then received a response that (more specifically suddenly) “a progress report” from the Kaiser MD would be required. (As I am no longer a member of the Kaiser HMO, I have no status to communicate with a Kaiser dr. If I went to Kaiser in person, I would be asking someone to manually parse through dozens of “after visit summary” docs to find the applicable language among my multi-purpose derm visits. This is not reasonable.) The DUPLICITY of Dr. S in saying face-to-face that he would write the one requested RX, then deciding later that he would not (without very involved efforts by me to retrieve Kaiser documents) I find very disturbing. In stating that more paperwork from Kaiser was needed, I was never advised of the potential problem with the RX I was supposedly being protected from. I fail to see why the RX was denied. To put in perspective, the RX topical in question is innocuous enough that it is also available OTC (though at greater cost for the uninsured buyer). I WILL HAVE TO SEE A NEW DERMATOLOGIST DUE TO THE DEFICIENT EXAM and strange response to RX fill requests. I cannot recommend Dr. S to others due to the condescension, the breezy, incomplete exam, the duplicity re actions to be taken, the RX strangeness, and the spotty/unreliable responses to inquiries via the USC patient email portal.

Dr. Sawcer is great. Gentle and accurate diagnosis. However USC staff/ system was not organized at all. **Had problems with appointments few times. As well as phone calls to leave a msg regarding immediate upcoming surgery. **Which they never called back as they've promised. **Arrived at the facility for surgery, signed all the forms, informed them of the surgery appointment I had w/ Dr. Sawcer, waited for 30min... Only to find out from Dr. Sawcer that he never know he had an appointment for surgery. **He is a great doctor regardless of how unorganized USC KECK is...

I feel like Dr. Sawcer cared about my problems he went the extra mile. Very caring

I needed to reach him to get a new prescription some face cream I hadn't used recently and it was impossible to reach anyone in his office who would help. They kept asking me to have the pharmacy fax them but since I was a new customer at that pharmacy the pharmacy couldn't help either. After 21 days of trying, I decided to move on to a dermatologist.

Very straightforward and professional manner, extremely efficient, and inspires confidence. I highly recommend him.
