Dr. David Jacob Schopick, MD

We have been seeing Dr. Schopick for 6 years now. After having a negative experience with the local mental health center, we decided to find a private practice psychiatrist who would work with our son’s complex needs. Dr. Schopick is a trusted member of our son’s treatment team. He uses years of experience, to make experience-based and research based decisions. He does come across as no-nonsense. If you are expecting the more coddling approach of a therapist, then get a therapist. Dr. Schopick attempts to tease out the necessary facts needed to determine if a course of treatment is working, or needs to be adjusted. My son is a complex case and it has required very close monitoring at times, trying different meds, different doses and different combinations, to find stability. At times we needed to see the doc weekly (when less stable), but now we see him every 3 months. He always warns of potential side effects and screens for them. He makes sure routine bloodwork is done, if… particular meds can have un-seen side effects. He does have strong opinions based on his experience and knowledge, however he does listen to patients. And if I ask why he is recommending this particular med, he will share his experience with it, or the research that supports it. There have been a couple times over the years where I (the parent) have disagreed with a med change and he did ultimately respect my position. Appointments are easy to make and his office support Vicki is wonderful. Additionally, he has an emergency line - which we did have to use a few times over the years. I don’t think any other prescriber would have been willing to go on this needed, bold and intensive journey, to get my son to the stable point he is at today.

I feel very fortunate to have found Dr. Schopick, who (regrettably) has had to employ some heightened level of patience with me as I'm a poor rule follower. Ultimately, I followed his medical advise and have been compliant with my medical regimen and as a result, I've experienced real progress with respect to my depression and anxiety. I truly value Dr. Schopick's experience as well as his sense of humor, which always helps to elevate my mood. Finally, I appreciate the many recommendations Dr. Schopick has made to me in terms of books, lectures, etc. I should pursue on my own. I feel that Dr. Schopick truly cares about my well-being (he encourages me to call him at any time if there's a crisis), but I also benefit from (and need) a bit of tough love (if you will) to take my recovery more seriously. I highly recommend Dr. Schopick for his experience, compassion, personal attention and sense of humor. Thank you Dr. Schopick for helping me when nobody else would!

There are many examples of how Schopick is an unlikable, full of himself individual. However, I’ll give one instance if my wasted time with him. At the time, I had an eating disorder and he prescribed me Wellbutrin. I went to a few reputable medical sites and also discussed the prescription with my therapist. Wellbutrin is not appropriate for an individual such as myself. It was very clear. I brought this up with Schopick- not to discredit him but to better understand his thinking. He shut me down so fast. Apparently I am never to question anything he does. He’s the expert and I’m just an idiot patient. So a word to the wise, Schopick is the best and smartest doctor ever. You mustn’t be involved in your own recovery.

Dr. Schopick is a fantastic doctor and he is very patient and willing to work with your needs. He is very understanding and good at diagnosing exactly what the problem may be. Like I said in the title, he's the best psychiatrist I've ever had and I've been through several.

Dr. Schopick is a wonderful, n caring Psychiatrist! If you are like me n have never been on prescription meds, Dr. Schopick takes his time to find out about you n starts you on low dosages. Don't be afraid to go to him if you've never had treatment like this. I have been dealing with anxiety n depression for years n tried dealing with it on my own. I'm 40 now, n realized I really needed help. Dr. Schopick makes you feel comfortable n does everything in the patient's best interest to help.

I've been seeing Dr. Schopick for several years. After 20 years of struggling, he's the first doctor to reconsider my diagnoses and find the right combination of medicines. Within two months I was stable and have been so ever since. He is straightforward, honest and to the point - he does not spend a lot of time, which is normal for psychopharmacologists - and I appreciate his clear focus and skilled treatment. I like him and find him witty and smart. If you are looking for a talk therapist or someone very nurturing or if you are fragile, he might not be the right fit. But if you want a professional assessment and can withstand the trial and errors of finding the right treatment - I recommend him. His assistant is terrific and it's very easy to work with the office regarding appointments and insurance matters.

I've been seeing Dr. Schopick for several years and he's the first one to reconsider my original diagnoses and find the right combination of medicines. After decades of suffering, he had me stable within two months and I've remained so ever since. He's very honest and straightforward, smart and witty - he does not spend a lot of time, which is typical for a psychopharmacologist -- so he may not be the right fit for someone expecting a lot of talk therapy or who is particularly fragile. I like him immensely and appreciate his no nonsense approach and most importantly, his accurate diagnoses and treatment. His office is run very well and scheduling is easy. His assistant, Vicki, is terrific.

It is so reassuring to go online and see that others had a poor experience with Schopick too. I am reassured to see he treated others in callous, insensitive manner--I thought it was something about me personally. I can name all sorts of things he said before I finally decided to not see him anymore (he said something about my having a good looking body for example)but it was my last visit that made me seek help elsewhere. My final straw goes like this: I had ingested a bottle of pills and was hospitalized for a few days (the darkest days of my life). When I was released and I went to see him, he did not look up from his papers and did not greet me. He stared at his papers and told me I owed him $40. Seriously. It has been a while since this all happened and I am in such a better place in my life. I've never been better and its because I found a doctor who acts like she cares and I feel good talking to her. Unlike Schopick, my new doctor actually acts like she cares about… people. She makes me feel good about myself and treats me with respect. Writing a negative review about Schopick does not mean I am not ready to get help or face reality. I wrote this review to prevent others from wasting their time with this unkind man and his conduct makes me angry and sad. Please look for help elsewhere.

I have been seeing Dr. Schopick for an ongoing condition for over twenty years. He is extremely knowledgeable, very professional and has helped me tremendously. If you look at the negative reviews, I suggest you take into account that not everyone is able to acknowledge the help they need.
