Dr. David Merrill Smith, MD

My son was a patient of Dr. David Smith. We asked him for several weeks to have an MRI when he had a concussion. Several weeks later, I called his assistant Megan, and told her his eye was crossing in. She told me that was normal from the pressure in his head. The next week, I insisted he be seen by Dr. Smith. When Dr. Smith saw his eye, he then panicked and got an MRI immediately for that same day. He is now legally blind in one eye and cannot play the sports he loved. Dr. Smith called for a follow-up, I left him a message and have never heard back. This has been a very hard road for him. I asked repeatedly for an MRI. Dr. Smith of course will not talk to him. This has permanently changed the life of my teenager. My son deserved better attention to detail, better bedside manner and better care.

Never again. I hope that I will not have to visit the health center again and see this doctor. I didn't have a choice at the time, but no bedside manner and didn't listen to what I had to say. Acted as if I wasn't important and that I was taking his time. There might be other doctors that are better, but would not want to see him again. I've heard he is leaving or has left -- wouldn't wish him on anyone.

My parents took me to pediatricians and then a family doc growing up but went I went to college I had an opportunity to use the student health center for several injuries and an illness. Dr. Smith is the best physician I have ever seen. He figured out a difficult medical problem and guided me through the treatment. He is extremely knowledgeable in both sports medicine and general medicine. He listens well and has a very caring personality. Too bad I will graduate this year and can't continue seeing him after college.
