Dr. David Mc Caughey Spencer, MD

I started taking my family to Dr Spencer many years ago and our first interactions were very good and I have recommened many to him. Though he interactions used to be more detailed they are not any longer. Without a lot of conversation, I had several sections of skin removed for "testing" (read cancer screening). Nothing was said about it - nothing. I had to ask when I should hear back. I had asked about 2 areas to be treated and they did not treat either area nor did they say anything to me about them. He left me with a nice PA but that too was very uncomfortable. I was in a state of undress and a staff member tried to enter the room without allowing me any chance to cover up. Really! They simply wanted a piece of equipment that was in the room. So unprofessional! Also, the PA stood there and rather than leave the room or turn around, watched me dress. Again, so unprofessional! If I did not have the cancer test to wait on I would not return without talking directly to him about… all that happened!

I saw Dr. Spencer for many years. He never had a good bedside manner but I felt I received good care. He was always direct and to the point. However lately he became very dismissive. Hurries through appts, seems annoyed if he has to take extra time and dismisses questions or concerns. I almost feel as though I am wasting his time or bothering him by coming in. I'll be changing doctors.

This was the worst experience ever! Thank God I got a second opinion. The office called me and said the spot they removed from my breast was benign and then the next day a different person called and had me come in. The doctor said he needed to go deep into my breast tissue to make sure they removed everything! They did the same exact thing with a spot they removed on my daughter. Two different calls with two different results. The dermatologist that looked at it in Winston-Salem Dermatology said it was fine after reading my lab results and said I made a good decision by getting a second opinion. My daughter's was fine too.

I've been a patient of Dr. Spencer for 15+ years. He has done a great job treating my sun damaged skin. He is a warm and caring physician that always answers my questions and treats me with patience and respect.

My sister just left this office in tears because of this man. She and her 14 month old son were being seen/treated by this man related to a recent issue with breastfeeding. She told him that her son was afraid of doctors, to which he replied "well it's a good thing I don't have on a white coat." His bedside manner was terrible. She was told that she needed to quit breastfeeding her 14 month old immediately because "he receives no nutrition from you now anyways." He was cold and insensitive. He did not shake her hand, or tell her goodbye when leaving the room. He did not take the time to listen to her concerns or complaints during her visit. He made no mention of her needing to follow up (unless she refused to breastfeed, to which he told her she'd have to undergo "a very extensive and expensive procedure"), but at checkout, was told she'd need to come back in 2 weeks. For anyone to leave a doctor's office crying and feeling stupid and like they're being forced to stop breastfeeding is… incredibly inappropriate. What a jerk.

We have known Dr. Spencer for 15+ years. He is warm, professional and talented. He has always been thoughtful and sensitive to our needs.

I have been a patient of Dr. Spencer's for about 20 years and have not found another Dermatologist in the area that is as knowledgeable in assessing various dermatologic issues. Yes, he is direct and to the point....but it works for me. I have experienced a few rude staff over the course of 20 years, but for the most part, his staff is friendly and professional. I would recommend him wholeheartedly!

I have never been treated so poorly by any doctor as I was by Dr. Spencer. He was rude, demeaning and brutal with the work he did on my eye, with no warning as to what the procedure would entail.

I have been going to Dr Spencer for seven years during which time I have been extremely pleased with his professionalism and his directness. He quickly and competently serves his patient with respect for both his and their time. I would strongly recommend him.
