Dr. David Lee Spivey, MD

If I could give a negative rating, then I would. I started seeing Dr. Spivey at Greensboro Preferred Pain Management in the Winter of 2018 after experiencing chronic and debilitating neck and arm pain for the past 6/7 years. I had been to so many doctors who could not figure out what was wrong with me, and the last resort was to send me to pain management to get hopped up on medications. It was here that I met Dr. Spivey - possibly the worst provider I have EVER seen. He was extremely condescending, and I NEVER felt like he listened to anything I was saying. He completed injections and nerve blocks (one that hit something incorrectly and caused extreme, unnecessary pain, and vaguely apologized for). My physical therapists repeatedly send progress reports suggesting further testing for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) as my symptoms fit this condition to a T. He told me that it was TOO HARD TO DIAGNOSIS and that the testing was difficult. And that was it. Fast forward a year and a half… later, the 7/8th year of pain I went to UNC Pain Management were RIGHT AWAY they sent me to be tested for TOS and sent to a surgeon who stated that we needed to do surgery immediately. While surgery ultimately did help, I will never fully recover because it took so long to be diagnosed and there had been so much nerve damage done. I could have saved myself so much time of being in pain had I been listened to and validated. But that was not the case. I was not only dismissed but told I should see a psychologist because the pain could be in my head. I never felt so invalidated and so small from any provider, let alone person. The only thing I gained from this terrible experience (aside from a ton of unnecessary medical costs from procedures that could have been avoided if he tested be for TOS was the notion that you are your own advocate and you MUST stand up for yourself and make your voice heard. I urge you to read this and consider the situation. I hope you can make the best decision for you.

Since he became my Pain Management Specialist, from my first visit with him, he had already understood my situation, and my injuries. He explains - very clearly - what he wants to do, and why - spinal injections, cartography, etc. He tried to set up my surgery, but (beyond his control, because of COVID), it is delayed for now... He is very personable, a great conversationalist (who remembers everything!), and a very awesome doctor - and person! :)

If you are not going to listen to don't him even bother. He has really helped me. He is not there to dish out pills. Pain Management is exactly what they do.

I would NOT recommend this office to anyone. Has no compassion for the patient. Seems to only care about injections and money that they can get upfront. Wouldn't even schedule a follow up visit with me to discuss MRI results and options and to answer my questions.

I was getting a cortisone shot in my neck. My legs moved involuntary. He screamed at me and told me not to move or I could be paralyzed from the neck down. Among other choice words. I told him I didn't do it on purpose and he blessed me out. He was hitting nerves that made my legs jump. This guy is very unprofessional.

Do not see this man. He will not help you! He is condescending,a bully with no compassion. He talks over you and assumes you are a drug seeking junkie. He assumes you are a liar and demands proof from other doctors before he does anything. At my second appointment he received the MRI image he wanted. He blew it off and scolded me because the report from my arthritis doctor was not there. Not my fault I told them to send it to him. Telling me he was a doctor and needed all my records to treat me! Well Dr. Spivey you need my MRI to truly treat me. The doctor who did it was surprised at how well I was doing with my pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys, and liver given my family history. The report was so good that the doctor said to make an appointment in one year but if I show no symptoms then I don't need to see him. Something kind of important I think. I went to DR. Spivey hoping for a treatment plan that would not be harsh on those organs,something like a trans-dermal patch or something to… ease my pain and hopefully get ahead of it so I could control it in time with an OCT Naproxen at a low does. I left my second appointment in unbelievable pain, demoralized and ashamed. He got $600 from me and my insurance company and in return I got nothing but him being a bully, mean to me and him boasting about being a doctor. I am telling all of this because this man is dangerous and an egomaniac. I have a multi year record of 100% clean blood and urine tests by multiple doctors. I do not drink, I do not do drugs. He knows that and still I am a junkie. My pain is real. I can not hold a fork and now dressing myself is getting harder. I am the sole caretaker of my mother who has cancer and is going through chemo right now. He knows that and yet he has done nothing. In part, it is doctors like him, that people with legitimate chronic pain do not get treated and the help they need. We don't want this pain, we don't want to have to be on pain medicine, we want understanding and help. Dr. Spivey will not give that to you. You are a junkie to Dr. Spivey until you prove to his satisfaction you are not. Do not waist your time or money with him!! GO SOME PLACE ELSE!!!!!!!!!

I have been a patient of Dr. Spivey since he first came to Winston-Salem in 2008. I was in agony when I first went to him. He quickly found the problem with my lower back and through a series of injections and various procedures, he was able to get me to the point of being able to live a relatively normal life. While there are many things that I can't do for fear of aggravating my condition, I am not in excruciating pain anymore. Of course, I still have procedures when needed and I take my medications as specified. Even with the medications, I still have pain but it is manageable. I felt like I was reading reviews about someone I had never encountered. I have had only great experiences with Dr. Spivey, Chad and Dr. Mark. The staff has always gone out of its way for me to make sure that I could get in to see the doctor when needed. I understand all of the rules of the practice and the narcotic agreement. As long as you do what you are supposed to- keeping your appointments, keeping up… with your meds and following directions about how to take your medications, I don't think anyone would have any kind of problem with this practice. In this kind of practice there has to be strict adherence to the rules. If you understand that, you won't have any problems.

Dr. Spivey has helped me. All the negative reviews must be from pillheads wanting a prescription.

Office staff was rude and uncaring. .I was unable to get a prescription refill as I was told I could by the doctor.. I would not recommend this Dr. to anyone.

I was so excited the morning of my appointment with Dr Spivey in hopes he would be "the one" to help cure me from years of pain. I had surgery last year but continue to suffer from nerve pain. The joke was on me, from the moment he walked into the examination room he was rude, verbally abusive, belittling, and insulting. He criticized my responses to his questions before I could complete my answers. I told him three times I didn't need a prescription for pain medication then he questioned whether I was really in pain. I think it was obvious to him I was in a lot of pain and he took advantage of my weakness by being arrogant and condescending. Lesson Learned: I WILL NEVER GO TO ANOTHER DOCTOR BEFORE I READ THEIR REVIEWS. Sadly, I didn't read his until I got home and was floored by what I read. It was like all these people writing these reviews on Dr Spivey was telling my story. All these "1" ratings are justified and I hope you get to read them before your appointment.
