Dr. David Matthew Walton, MD

Dr. Walton is respectful, and personable. In the beginning of my care, I felt he was actively working to solve my complex, two-plus year ankle injury that earlier providers were unsure how to handle. He was the first to identify deltoid ligament involvement in my MRI, and I appreciated his effort during that period. Over time, however, as my case became less straightforward, appointments began to feel rushed toward the end, and I felt there was less space to fully discuss my concerns. After almost three years of persistent medial ankle pain that prevented me from standing for more than 10 minutes, two rounds of physical therapy, bracing, custom orthotics, and a steroid injection that provided no relief, his final recommendation was simply to rest for 3–6 months with no follow up. Having already tried rest many times without improvement, I left that appointment feeling depressed. I thought my condition was hopeless. That I would always be unable to stand for even short durations, and… I would have to live with this worsening pain for the rest of my life. I realized I should seek a second opinion. That second surgeon believed my ankle was in a more dire condition, and they performed an ankle arthroscopy which found a complete avulsion of the deep deltoid ligament off the shin bone, a severely attenuated/ insufficient ATFL, and a 1 cm^3 fibular fragment embedded within the ATFL all of which were surgically repaired. Dr. Walton is a kind surgeon who I believe genuinely wanted to help me, and his conservative approach is appropriate for many patients. But if your injury is complex, chronic, and has already failed nonoperative treatment multiple times, I would strongly encourage to seek a second opinion because seeking a second opinion saved my ankle.

My ankle was in terrible condition when I saw Dr. Walton. He said it among the worst he had ever seen. It was as big as a large orange and I had lived with severe pain for the better part of twenty years. He did a total ankle fusion and I am now not only pain-free, except for some occasional twinges where the rod was inserted through the ball of my foot, but I have since made several trips where I hiked or walked long distances on European cobblestone without pain. I can even swim without issue, which surprised Dr. Walton. As well as being surgically very skilled, he is one of the nicest doctors I have ever met - compassionate, friendly, willing to answer any question. He carefully explained the surgery and what I could expect in realistic terms beforehand. I also did my bit - my wife helped me follow the precise instructions for recovery, which involves several weeks of complete immobility of the ankle and a regime of bone-building supplements. I can highly recommend Dr.… Walton.

You can do better. I went in for surgery on my left ankle with an average daily pain level of 2. I have never walked right since and deal with pain daily at a level of 5-6. He made me flat footed with the adjustment he made, and it affected my hips from being even. I have done PT to the letter, and have been told by other doctors that he botched the surgery. I have not felt my 3 middle toes since the surgery, and he blamed that on the anesthesiologist. When it became clear that my pain and ability to walk were severely compromised, he told me there nothing else to be done about it. Run people.

Dr. Walton fixed my longtime ankle injury. He is talented, compassionate, and he took time to answer all of my and my partner’s questions. I highly recommend Dr. Walton.

Met with Dr. Walton today, reviewed my chart, my x-rays and examined my foot/toes. Came up with a great plan. Took his time to explain everything to me, the pros and cons. Highly recommend!

My first visit with Dr. Walton. He was very kind, took time to explain my problems with my ankles so I could have a very clear understanding about what was going on. He actually examined my ankles, not just a review of the x-rays. We had an at length conversation about treatments and some solutions to morning ankle pain and stiffness. I felt at ease with him and trust him to care for my ankle issues. I was very happy with the visit.

Dr. Walton was a 2nd opinion for me. He really made me feel comfortable, and educated my on what my best plan of care was. He did not make me feel rushed into having the procedure the first surgeon (from another facility) I saw did. His scheduler Tim, took time on the phone with me to work me in, and Dr. Walton took as much time as I needed during the visit. Very Satisfied.

Dr. Walton was extremely rude. He went into our appointment with his mind already made up. He shows absolutely no empathy and talks down to his patients. I would never recommend him to anyone.

Dr Walton and his team were more informative and friendly than any other orthopedic surgeon I have been to. I appreciate the time and effort they put in to get the right parts for my second ankle replacement. Surgery was on Friday and Dr Walton took time on a Saturday to stop by to see how I was doing. My last 5 surgeries this did not happen. Normally a resident PA. Dr Walton is very personable and will address any questions you have. Hopefully I will not need him again but if myself or my family has any need for orthopedics his office will be the first call.
